National Review Online’s Andrew McCarthy asks: Why does McCain get a pass on stifling the pro-life message in the service of suppressing free speech … for the benefit of pro-abortion Democrats?
There is only one candidate on the GOP side who has, in just the last few months and years, vigorously worked to defeat pro-life forces and frustrate the only policies that have a chance to reduce abortions; yet, conservatives have given him a total pass.
His name is John McCain.
Senator McCain, (recently endorsed by another pro-abortion group), has engaged in a years-long campaign against Wisconsin Right to Life, an organization dedicated to advancing the pro-life agenda. Conservatives, one might have thought, would be stunned by a grand-slam only the modern Left could love: McCain has (a) urged the courts to judicially legislate a (b) suppression of free-speech rights (c) against an anti-abortion group which was (d) trying to urge the confirmation of conservative Bush judicial nominees.
And the cherry on top? McCain’s exertions were singularly designed to protect one of the Senate’s most liberal incumbents: Russ Feingold (D., Wis.), McCain’s soul-mate in the evisceration of First Amendment rights (also known as the McCain/Feingold “campaign finance reform” law). A pro-abortion stalwart who scores a whopping 93 percent on NARAL’s pro-choice report card, Feingold has also opposed the Patriot Act and every sensible national security measure taken after 9/11 … in addition to seeking President Bush’s censure over the effort to penetrate al-Qaeda communications during wartime.

McCain filed as a friend of the court— Amici Curiae in the U.S. Supreme Court against Wisconsin Right to Life, against Wisconsin Right to Life. Despite McCain’s considerable efforts to surpress them, the court ruled in favor of Wisconsin Right to Life.

McCain is also a solid supporter of EMBRYONIC stem cell research. That is hardly pro-life.

McCain claims to be whatever he thinks a particular audience wants. In my book, that’s fakery. His “pro-life” credentials are a joke. How can you be pro-life and vote for harvesting of pre-born human life for experimentation?
If you believe him on this important issue, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

This is just the tip f the iceberg folks. I don’t know a word of truth the guy utters. That is why he is just like the Democrats. All he lacks is the honesty to call himself one. Amnesty is not Amnesty…..depends on the meaning of the word is….don’t you know.

Will there be any pieces left of the Republican party worth picking up once the MaCainiacs are finished? Hardly, but they will be able to “reach across the aisle” and have a “seamless garment” with which to advance the liberal banner. The “Big Tent” joke will have delivered its punch line.

Andrew McCarthey is right that McCain-Feingold was a bad bill and President Bush should have vetoed it, And the Supremes should have declared it unconstitutional. But in the first go-around, they didn’t. Then the WRTL case came along and they knocked out some of it. But no one has given Senator McCain a pass on this or ESCR
Yet McCarthy is not one to talk. He supported Giuliani, an open pro-abortion candidate, openly pro-homosexual candidate and so his animus is apparent. He was willing to accept Guiliani’s “promise” to pick good judges. But Guilani is not the nominee. Last year all I heard was that would be Guiliani and for us pro-lifers to get over it. McCarthy was a part of that sounding board.
Then National Review decides to support Romney. And the piece referenced was written in January 11, 2008. After all Romney who had a pro-abortion history had a conversion. He promised that he would nominate good judges. And McCarthey will accept that promise.
Well McCain voted for justices like Thomas, Roberts, Alito and Scalia. And he has heard from the pro-life movement regarding these issues. He has committed to selecting strict constructionist judges. If McCarthy can take the word of Guiliani and Romney, I hope he will be as magnanimous and take the word of Senator McCain.
Finally Senaotr McCain will be the nominee. He has committed to be a friend to the pro-life movemnt. Who do you want to see president? McCain or the Democratic nominee – either Obama or Clinotn . What kind of activist judges do you think either of them would appoint.
One may not like the cards one is given, but that is the real world as we stand here today.

McCain also voted for Ginsberg and Breyer, both liberal, pro-abortion Democrats. Ginsberg was an ACLU lawyer, for crying out loud! At least be consistant. You point to the things you like and omit the other pertinent facts, John J. For shame!!
