Gov. Evan Mecham was a man of deep faith, firm conviction and a successful businessman. He served in the AZ state senate was the subject of the AZ Republic’s ire from the day he was elected governor. Mecham did not bow and scrape to the will of the state’s largest newspaper, and eventually started his own, The Arizona Independent.
He was simultaneously the subject of a recall, impeachment and criminal charges were filed against him. Eventually, he was acquitted on all felony charges, but had already been removed from office. Secretary of State, Rose Mofford succeeded him as governor.
Rest in Peace, Governor.

A fine man. I also knew and supported him. He was treated very shabbily and deserved much better.
