McCain: Desperately seeking elusive conservatives

McAmnesty’s gimmicks don’t gain applause

Trying to walk a tightrope on immigration, while not alienating his previously reliable Hispanic supporters, doesn’t play well with the conservative base McCain so desperately needs—and who absolutely distrust him.

Associated Press does a good job on  McCain retools immigration stance.

Today’s daily Quick Hit from editorial writer Linda Valdez tells the whole story.  Chiding Democrats for abandoning Hillary,  Valdez ends her piece with this telling line:

“At least John McCain will deliver amnesty.”

  1. Thomas Says:

McCain has never held conservatives in high regard. Now he needs us. Tough.

  2. Ron Says:

I’ve been holding my nose and voting for liberal Republicans for years. After Bush’s betrayal at the border, I refuse to do it again.

  3. Macbeth Says:

It was after years of Democrats in the White House that we finally got a Ronald Wilson Reagan. I’m willing to chance it again. What’s the point of voting for a liberal with an R after his name?

Anyone–of either party–who trusts McCain on immigration has mush for brains. He says what he thinks will get him elected, giving just enough to what he thinks will win over conservatives, and carefully watching his words so as not to alienate his Hispanic base desirous of amnesty for lawlessness.

He’ll end up choking on that disgraceful forked tongue of his.

  6. Frankly Speaking Says:

McCain is a liberal. That is why Arizona Republicans who are knowledgeable about him dislike him so much. We have watched him too long, and know too well of his arrogance and rudeness. Most important is the fact that he has no plans to secure our border. He can talk endlessly about the need for national security and his plans to fight terror, but with our porous borders, Americans are sitting ducks. For this reason, I don’t simply dislike McCain. I despise him.

If he were to be elected, we would once again have his Border INSECURITY Plan shoved down our throats. As president, there would be no fighting him as happened previously. Why would anyone with children or grandchildren support this man and his treacherous plan that puts America in peril?

I am a lifelong Republican, and would never lift a finger to help the disreputable McCain. For the first time in my life, I will not be voting for president. This is very troubling to me, but McCain is even more so. I agree with the commenter who said it will be worth it to suffer through a Democrat administration, since the people would realize their error and come back to elect a real Republican. Why would we want to elect a liberal dressed up in Republican clothing? We’d be getting the exact same thing. I’ll sit this one out and vote the rest of the ticket.

  7. Charlie Conservative Says:

McCain is not only responsible for the Amnesty legislation attempt and lack of security on our border against terrorists, but he is responsible for the deaths of U.S. citizens killed by illegals through traffic accidents and murders. McCain is also responsible for the deaths of illegals who cross the border at his beckoning only to die in the desert. How about the rapes of illegals by smugglers, the increase in costs of education for children of illegals and resultant poor education for the children of U.S. citizens. Just for his support of illegal immigration, McCain is not fit for anything but being tarred and feathered for his betrayal of the Constitution and immigration law. Conservatives would have to be nuts to vote for him.

In deciding who our candidate will be, we seem to be left to choose among Pontius Pilate, the High Priestess(Hillary) and Judas (with an R after his name..betrayal from within)). Whomever we select, the result will be the same. And this is suppose to be a two party system?

    Charlie:
You paint a bleak picture of America’s future. I wish you were wrong, but fear your words are true. I have never felt so dismayed over the choices presented to us. If the comments here along with my friends, neighbors and relatives are any indication, McCain won’t be successful in swaying the GOP base to his side. Can you imagine a President Obama?

  9. Patriot Says:

Very well said in all the above comments. Even more disgusting is McCain taking the Party with him. Republican National Committeemen sleazed right into line to endorse the reprehensible McCain. The State Chairman forced to “grin and bear it.” The whole situation is stomach turning. Reopen the POW/MIA Investigations! I don’t want to hear one more misinformed voter refer to this coward as a “war hero!”

  10. Vince Says:

In one simple sentence: I will not be voting for the Amensty King.

  11. Maggie Says:

Ditto. You all said it very well. McCain’s ascendancy to head the GOP ticket is a sad day for all Republicans. This is so reminiscent of the Bob Dole “it’s my turn” foolish thinking. I have had enough, but what does a lifelong Republican do? What choices do I have? This is a sad time in our county’s history. We have three sell-outs vying to give our country away.

  12. Kent Says:

Doesn’t anyone like this guy? What’s up with this? If everyone hates him. how does he get reelected?

  13. Fooled twice Says:

He gets reelected by having opponents named Ed Ranger and Stuart Starky. Ever heard of them? Both were unknowns and under funded. Starky was a grade school math teacher,

McCain is the establishment darling due to his leftist views and associations. He routinely teams up with liberal Senate colleagues like Russ Feingold and Ted Kennedy on legisltaion that harms Republicans and the GOP—such as campaign finance “reform.”. He authored the insane and anti-American immigration “reform” bill (along with his cohort Jon Kyl) which provided an open door for illegals and then rewarded them with amnesty. McCain voted against the Bush tax cuts, supports same sex marriage and embryonic stem cell research. The list goes on. Is it any wonder he is not beloved by conservatives within his own party? The Wing-nut Arizona Republic loves him. That should tell you all you need to know.

Watch this if you need more. I saw it here first.

Great video!! I missed it first time around. Thanks, FT. This gives me many answers when the topic of McCain arises. I just copied this video link and sent it out to my list.

  15. Horst Kraus Says:

I guess you guys all should start going into mourning right now. This way you’ll be over it when you hear the roar that follows the first call at the GOP National Convention in Minneapolis - St Paul in August. That will give you almost 6 month of self induced misery before you can rejoin and rejoice in your party’s victory over ignorance and stupidity.
