Savoring those delicious reciprocal endorsements

Len Munsil, Arizona’s one-time GOP candidate for governor, returns the favor of John McCain’s 2006 endorsement in that race. In today’s Viewpoints section of the daily, Munsil extols the virtues of the left-of-center McCain, terming him “worthy of the enthusiastic support of every thinking conservative.”

Munsil’s column was unavailable in the online version when this was posted.

Munsil excitedly conveys ” I met John McCain when I was in College!” WOW! That’s coooolll! Is it my imagination or did Munsil emphasise technology over physical barriers at the border when he ran for governor? Munsil offers the same reasons to vote for McAmnesty that he did for voting for himself…….”My opponent’s even worse.”

  2. Keen Observer says:

Well SeeingRed you made me go out and purchase the Fish-wrapper Sunday edition after I had finally gotten my stomach back to normal by cancelling the RAG. Are you getting a kick-back? Clever ruse you play. We need Senate hearings about kick-backs to SeeingRed.

Munsil’s bit is the worse piece of misdirection and cover-up I have yet seen by a McCain apologists.

As Len states it, “McCain is worthy of enthusastic support of every thinking conservative… He has core conservative beliefs …serving a cause greater than himself. ” What utter ROT. I suppose the 53% of Republicans who voted against him in the Az primary just don’t have the ability to think. Likewise, the precinct committeemen at the Maricopa County meeting who elected McCain as their least favored candidate. Likewise Dr James Dobson, your Center For Az Policy connection, is just too dumb when he says he will not vote in the presidential election if McCain is the candidate.

The problem is McCain has no core beliefs. You truly have no idea what position he will take, but a good bet would be the liberal position on key legislation backed by conservatives. The only cause McCain serves is himself. He has demonstrated that over and over again. Would Len have the audacity to say McCaine has served the Republican Conservative cause or the Constitution well with Campaign Finance Reform, attempt to close gun shows, illegal alien Amnesty, refusal to defend our border with Mexico?

It is not “in our national interest to elect McCain,” as Len states. It is in Mexico’s interest to elect McCain to export their culture of corruption to us, as well as the interest of terrorists who want to continue to cross our borders unencumbered.

Len says, “I am concerned that some conservatives are heading down a path that will result in the destruction of every principle they claim to promote.” No Len, McCain has already taken us down that path. There has been no more polarizing, divisive politician in Republican history than John McCain. and conservatives know that.

Len says further that “Foreign-policy conservatives should have the least concern about McCain.” Are you kidding me? After his last foreign policy speech that enraged conservatives….Close Gitmo, etc. Sounded more like a wish that the UN take over the United States and turn our sovereignty over to South America, and oh yes, he said we have got to stop global warming.

Len also says that McCain is best equipped to handle Islamic extremists. Oh yeah, he will send troops for a hundred years to die protecting Iraq’s border & citizens, but Allie-Allie-in-free when it comes to protecting the U.S. border and citizens from invaders.

Per Len again, “McCain not only has voted pro-life for two decades, but has pledged to appoint judges who are committed to constitutional fidelity.” The record shows otherwise.
McCain led the battle for, or voted for, or favored taxpayer funding for:

Fetal tissue research ( conduct research on aborted fetuses)
Embryonic Stem Cell research (creation & destruction of human life for research)
Campaign Finance Reform (cut off free speech for Right-to-Life Organizations)
Submitted legal brief against R-T-L freedom of speech at U.S. Supreme Court
Stated his then-under-age daughter would have the ultimate decision on abortion
Served on Advisory Board for Christie Todd Whitman’s pro-abortion PAC

McCain’s “Baby” is Campaign Finance Reform. He will appoint judges who will protect his baby, and those judges are not likely to be constitutional fidelitists.

Here’s Len again, “McCain supports marriage as the union of one man and one woman.” So he says, but only state by state. He opposes a Constitutional Amendment. Fifty separate state laws governing what is marriage. Oh, that is real clear thinking. Sounds more like another piece of McCain triangulation. I am sure the trial lawyers are in favor of this one.

Here comes Len again, “McCain’s lifelong quest to reduce size and scope of gov’t.” How about the estimated 4 trillion for his Amnesty Bill? Now there’s a real cost and scope buster.

Per Len, McCain has a conservative lifetime rating of 82.3%. How about recently Len. I remember it being in the mid 60′s.

Munsil’s most preposterous claim is that McCain’s concern for national security will cause him to do much more to secure the borders than any Democrat. Have you forgotten Len that it was Republican McCain who led the battle for open borders via Amnesty? It wasn’t a Democrat! Even now when McCain says he “gets it”, he says he will have Janet Napolitano certify that the border is secure before he looks again at Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Now that’s a man who still doesn’t get it. And neither apparently do you Len Munsil.

SeeingRed, I am going to stop reading your blog if you keep this up. My stomach is in knots again.

  3. Marianne says:

I voted for Len Munsil, but he is way off base on this McCain endorsement. His facts are skewed, as well. But I see that McCain endorseed him–probably under pressure, since I doubt McCain would be a great Munsil fan.

  4. Fooled Twice says:

I was deeply saddened to read this op-ed from Len Munsil. He has taken a massive swallow of the Kool Aid. I won’t even begin to guess all of the reasons why. Munsil knows all too well that McCain is on an even par with both of the Democrats. I, too, worry about socialized medicine and judicial appointments. However I worry even more about our lax border policies which threaten the very security of this nation. Munsil, as I recall from campaign flyers, has a large family. Isn’t he concerned about the America McCain wants to present to his children? If he isn‘t, please know that I am! I also have a family and actually pray that McCain will not be elected. We can survive a four year term with a democrat at the helm of state, if that’s what it takes to awaken this nation.

We can NOT survive a leftist Republican who will do more actual and collateral damage than either of his opponents. People know what they will get from a democrat. With McCain, many will think they are voting for a conservative and will be sadly mistaken when he shows his true colors to the great number of uniformed in the electorate.

Munsil has disappointed me with his fawning piece, which I went out and purchased at Circle K this morning after reading this post. My wife collected signatures for Munsil when he ran. That won’t happen again.

  5. Had Enough says:

Munsil has been in the game for a long time. He has become a deal-maker. Nathan Sproul was one of his strategists. Doesn’t that say enough?

  6. Hometown Guy says:

When conservatives start promoting liberals, it makes me wonder what hope there is for turning our country around.

Munsil made a deal with the devil during his own campaign and now is repaying that debt.

  7. Joe Evans says:

McCain is now “worthy of the enthusiastic support of every thinking conservative?” What a farce that statement is and Munsil knows it. This is an over-the-top mischaracterization of what we conservatives know McCain to be.

McCain and Munsil stand miles apart on most of the significant issues. I resent being played for a fool.

If one connects the dots, there is more to this than merely the obvious quid pro quo of scratching one another’s backs. Sean Noble, Rep. John Shadegg’s chief of staff, played a major role in Munsil’s campaign. Shadegg was initially encouraged in his congressional career by Jon Kyl, who is McCain’s senate seat mate and amnesty co-promoter. This is all part of the inner workings of a warped clock its with springs askew.

  8. Celia says:

What a disappointment to read that Len Munsil is willing to give John McCain a pass on all of his positions that are anything but conservative. Where are Munsil’s principles?

  9. Sideliner says:

I’m not easily thrown, but this article did it for me. I read the complete article as my still subscribing neighbor was getting ready to throw his Sunday paper in the trash, today and I rescued the Viewpoints section.

We’ve been a Munsil supporters. I did some peripheral yard sign work and phone calling on his campaign and we voted for him. McCain’s endorsement of him must have included some arm twisting and promises. What a backroom effort getting that must have been since McCain has been openly critical of evangelicals.

This was clearly a case of each one needing something from the other and being willing to cast aside some principles to achieve the desired goal. Munsil lost by a wide margin, proving such tactics don’t warm the hearts of conservative base voters.
    I can attest to that!
