This is an election year, Mr. Shadegg, and your constituents are not with you on this
On the eve of a key vote on a temporary-worker program for Arizona, the proposal has won the endorsement of a friend in a high place: U.S. Rep. John Shadegg.
“I have been a consistent supporter of a guest-worker program from . . . forever,” Shadegg said Friday. “Since when I was growing up in Arizona.”
Although he emphasized that he is unfamiliar with the details of the bill, Shadegg finds the idea “appealing,” according to a report in the daily.
“I think a guest-worker program is a step down the road to solving this problem,” he said, referring to illegal immigration.
Shadegg was among congressional members who backed the McCain-Kennedy-Kyl “comprehensive immigration reform,” which many regarded as granting amnesty to the estimated 30 million illegals currently in this country. That plan was derailed as an unprecedented outcry from American citizens shut down the congressional switchboard, alerting representatives to the fury such a scheme generated.
But Shadegg on Friday said a temporary-worker program should ease the strain on the border. “If people could cross lawfully, the motivation for them to cross illegally would drop,” he said.

No further support for John Shadegg from this PC. Too bad he got back in the race. We could get this much from a Democrat. Let’s hope Shadegg has no coattails to derail our state races. A lot of voters are going to see this as “not a dime’s worth of difference between the parties.”

This is an extremely disappointing announcement. He doesn’t even sound all that sure of his position, except that he’s held it “forever.”
Mark AZ, you talk about coattails. Shadegg is definitely riding on McCain’s and Kyl’s—and they are both supporters of amnesty, regardless of what name they choose to give it.

What was the point of making this non-announcement announcement? Only to give aid and comfort to John McAmnesty. The evidence of Shadegg’s lack of commitment to his constituents was confirmed when he originally announced he was NOT going to run for reelection a short time back. The mind change, which I recall this site made a gleeful to-do over, was probably based in large part on assisting McCain by not dividing interparty loyalties and keeping the focus on John McCain’s presidential bid. Shadegg is nothing if not a team player. Actually, I’ve always supported him. This “announcement” makes me rethink his commitment to ME–the hell with JSMc,III.

He probably has no plans to run again. It’s doubtful Kyl will be back, and McOldster–once he’s sold the Republican party down the river–won’t be back in the senate.
This gives them all a grand opportunity to screw the very same people who steadfastly supported them in the past, with no repercussions.
What a scam on American citizens. But most importantly. WHY????

Mr. Shadegg:
If you read this, please note that at least one of your dependable donor sources has suddenly dried up. I can get this from your opponent Bob Lord.

He’s also selling us a load of immigration horse pucky
What is the point of campaigning this way? You’ve alienated me and I’ve been a longtime and stalwart supporter. But, I’m a father first. I would like to ensure that my children and theirs have the same opportunities I enjoyed. Life in a third-world country is not what I envision for them.

This is terribly frustrating. As Republican voters, are choices are becoming thinner with each passing day. Formerly reliable conservatives are quacking like McDucks.

This is nothing new… after Shadegg supported McCain-Kennedy, I knew he was a lost cause.

Perhaps Shadegg thinks we can reinstitute the old Bracero farm worker program of the 1940 -1950’s. If so, he’s wrong.
1. Those farm laborers picked crops and returned home to Mexico.
2. Today’s illegals are not picking crops–and if they do so initially they are not doing that for long. They are taking the myriad construction jobs that have undergirded middle class American citizen families for generations. Large portions of the monies they make are sent as remittances to Mexico. These amounted to an estimated $20 BILLION last year alone. (Bank of America allows FREE wire transfers to Mexico!) The fact that we are propping up the corrupt Mexican government’s economy remains paramount to this issue.
3. More and more crops are being mechanically harvested. Field farm labor is less necessary.
We need representatives who will look out for Americans.

I’m an elected delegate to the state GOP convention this coming Saturday. I’m almost to the point of thinking, “why bother?” This will be a coronation of a liberal wolf running in sheep’s clothing as a Republican. A number of those on the “McUnity Slate” are RINOs who have donated money to liberal Democrats and their causes. It will entail at least a couple of hours drive for me to attend the convention. My son has a game this weekend, gas is expensive, I distrust most of our delegation and I am underwhelmed with our presidential choice. Hey, I think I’m talking myself out of going…
What if they gave a party and nobody came?
May 5, 2008 at 3:29 pm
And how exactly does Shadegg’s scheme differ from those of the most liberal congressional Democrats? What’s going on here? Whose side are these people on? Is there something in the DC water than muddles their brains?
I’m getting awfully tired of being snowed by Republicans when it comes to the border.
I have come to accept this deceptive sell out by the opposition, but expect more from those I had respected. No more. I wish I lived in Trent Frank’s district. At least he has a backbone!

“For those who want to become citizens, I think that pathway ought to be open to them.”

WHY OH WHY couldn’t Shadegg have stayed retired, so that we could have a chance of voting for a REAL CONSERVATIVE this time around. Instead it looks like I’ll be staying home this election….NOT voting for McLame, NOT voting for Shadegg.
What ever happened to real leaders who stood on principle and knowing right from wrong…now all we have are “politicians.”
May 6, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I would encourage you not to stay home, PV. There are many other good people on the ballot who need conservative support.
May 6, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Sonoran Voter:
Missed your comment earlier. Wow!! That is stunning. Shadegg is morphing into Ted McKyl. He’ll win, but this time it will not be with my vote.
May 6, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Hey Maggie….I won’t stay home, there are some down ticket races that have real conservatives in them, but I will not be voting for Shadegg this time around, and DEFINITELY not McLame.
May 6, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Glad to hear that, PV. You and I are on the same page.
