Defiant administrators subject to harsh reprimands
A Tucson-area school district plans to defy a state law requiring all students learning English to have four-hour daily language immersion classes, saying federal civil rights rules take precedence.
The decision by the Sahuarita Unified School District to exclude its middle and high school students drew an immediate response from Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne, who said he was “shocked” and disturbed the district planned to ignore the 2006 state law.
“Any administrator who participates in open defiance of a state law would be subject to a complaint against his or her certificate for unprofessional conduct,” Horne warned Friday.
The daily reports that Sahuarita’s move comes just months before Arizona school districts are required to implement the 2006 state mandate requiring four-hour instruction blocks for students learning English
Earlier this year the legislature appropriated $40.6 million to implement the plan.
Another glowing example of politically correct arrogance resulting in insubordination to the state education superintendent, yes, but also to the people of Arizona.
This is the law. The defiant Sahuarita Unified School District should feel the sting of a harsh reprimand. If the district desires to craft their own law, their employees should run for the legislature.
Most importantly, this does no favor to the children who are already behind the eight-ball by not speaking English—the language of the country in which they live, and the international language of business and commerce.
I think I said that the insanity out of Tucson’s educational system hadn’t come to an end the last time we heard something about this.
Is it possible that the Sahuarita District is trying to hold the state of Arizona over a barrel on meeting federal guidelines for education funding?
