Utah’s Rep. Chris Cannon defeated by anti-Amnesty political neophyte

Are GOP congressional candidates watching?

We won’t even try to improve on Michelle Malkin, who says it perfectly:

“Every time an immigration enforcement proponent loses a seat in Congress, the open-borders Wall Street Journal and their ilk use it to argue that Republicans need to support shamnesty to maintain political viability. The WSJ falsely framed the 2006 midterm election losses of GOP Reps. John Hostettler, Randy Graf, and J.D. Hayworth as electoral rejection of strict enforcement of immigration laws-conveniently ignoring the fact their opponents campaigned to their right on the issue.

Well, what will the WSJ and company say about what happened today to one of their favorite shamnesty/DREAM Act shills, GOP Rep. Chris Cannon?

Cannon, a six-term incumbent went down in flames in the Utah primary, defeated by Republican Jason Chaffetz-an underfunded political newcomer who made opposition to illegal immigration, rejection of amnesty, and support for tough deportation policies a top campaign issue. Cannon outspent Chaffetz 7-to-1 and had the entire GOP establishment from the White House on down backing him.”

This should serve as a warning to the amnesty and guest worker supporters representing us in DC that the natives are growing weary and restless. The guest worker scheme will not work as long as we have the 14th Amendment in place. Time to repeal it. It is also past time to deal honorably with those of us who elected you and want the insanity to stop!

  2. Gary Says:

Not one bit sorry to see this turn of events. Hope it gets some of our AZ limp-wristers thinking.

  3. Ron Says:

These are the successful points the underfunded newcomer, Jason Chaffetz campaigned and WON on:

    ▪ FIX LEGAL IMMIGRATION

    ▪ REJECT AMNESTY

    ▪ LOCK DOWN THE BORDER, ENFORCE VISAS

    ▪ HAVE THE POLITICAL WILL TO ENFORCE THE CURRENT LAWS

    ▪ GET RID OF REWARDS & INCENTIVES TO BE HERE ILLEGALLY

    ▪ GIVE BUSINESS THE TOOLS & ALIGN FINANCIAL INCENTIVES

    ▪ INSIST ON ASSIMILATION

    A winning platform!!!!

And statements like this are the reason Rep.Chris Cannon lost!

“We love immigrants in Utah. And we don’t make the distinction very often between legal and illegal. In fact, I think Utah was the first state in the country to legislate the ability to get a driver’s license base on the matricula consular and of that I’m proud.”

  5. Lucy Says:

Here is what Robert Novak had to say about the results – “Cannon was vulnerable because of his liberal stance on abortion, and Chaffetz masterfully parlayed a broader dissatisfaction with Washington into a mandate for change.” Of course the media does not want to talk about this.

  6. Charlie Conservative Says:

Are you kidding me? Kyl, Shadegg & Flake wise up? Lots of luck. They were linked to McCain at birth. They would rather destroy the party than oppose McCain, and they are proving it now. Any conservative with a lick of common sense can see what an arrogant, stubborn fool McCain is and Kyl, Shadegg and Flake have known this far longer than we have.

Amnesty & Global warming advocacy, no drilling for oil in U.S. This is our Republican leadership? God help us. We are going to pay for this poor leadership as did Cannon. Who could have saved us from this coming disaster? Kyl, Shadegg, and Flake could have. They failed to even try. and they abuse the power we gave them by ostracizing & silencing rank and file Republicans who try to point out the obvious. May their names live in infamy.

And God bless Rush Limbaugh for his courageous clear thinking.

  7. Calypso Says:

Six-termer Cannon was smashed in a lopsided 60 – 40 vote! Those figures speak louder than any words. You can’t keep giving the country away. Eventually the people will rise up.

  8. Kate Says:

If it were only so in Az. Too bad we could not oust our two McCain backing equivocating congressman Flake & Shadegg. Amnesty and guest worker anyone?

  9. John Q. Public Says:

The results of this upset certainly lays lie to the liberal’s favorite reason why border enforcement supporter J.D. Hayworth was defeated by Mitchell.

Grandpa Harry Mitchell, the mild mannered school teacher–who opted to use campaign ads showing (husband and father) Hayworth in the crosshairs of a gun sight.
    What a sweetheart.

So far the WSJ hasn’t reported it to the best of my knowledge. But the WSJ was sure quick to try to tie in Graf and Hayworth’s losses to their stances on immigration. The reality was that Hayworth was the victim of gerrymandering and a last-minute smear campaign by the Repugnant and Graf didn’t even have GOP financial backing, if memory serves.

The WSJ is typically open borders/ open immigration and has in recent months called for unlimited immigration. A member of the editorial staff at the WSJ has written a propaganda book for open borders. Economist Jagsdish Bhagwati and the CEO of an Indian medical services company co-authored an editorial advocating free (read: corss-border) trade in health care. Make no mistake – the WSJ may mostly be informed by economic conservative thought – but in no way are these people ever going to be social conservatives.
