A new law, A.R.S 28-2354(B), goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2009 stating “a person shall maintain each license plate so it is clearly legible and so that the name of this state at the top of the license plate shall not be obscured.”
The fines for violating this new law vary throughout the state, ranging from $110 to $200, depending on the jurisdiction, with fines in the greater Metropolitan Phoenix area averaging about $136, advises the Sonoran News.
It takes less than a minute with a Phillips-head screwdriver to either remove a noncompliant frame altogether or replace it with one that is.
The article shows a license plate in compliance and one that is not.
Good reminder. Thanks. When I leave work, I’m picking up the screwdriver as soon as I pull into my garage
Absolutely! Do it now while it’s fresh in your mind. Who needs to be shelling out another high dollar confiscatory fee to bolster the government coffers?
For those of you that are handy you can use metal snips or a fine grinder to customize your expensive plate holder to be in compliance. Remember the the word “Arizona” must not be obscured in any way. Many of the auto dealers were given a heads up on this and have new license plate holders for little or no charge upon request.
What’s next? Fines for dull windshield wipers?
How did something like this ever pass the legislature! For years there were license plate holders that partially obscured the plates. Never a problem. Now suddenly it’s a problem !!! Between Photo Cams every few feet and on every traffic signal and now license plate fines(!) — Arizona is fast becoming a Big Brother/Police State for sure! Yessiree — AZ will get every dime from its citizens one way or another. Whatever happened to freedom and civil liberties…..
