In an article titled, “Roe v. Wade Supporter Scott Brown, Improbable Pro-Life Hero,” columnist David Gibson calls attention to a political oddity. Since this weekend marks the 37th anniversary of the dreadful Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, the discussion is especially relevant.
While support for abortion continues to decline across the country, the election of Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts, the bluest of blue states, might be time for a moment of reflection. Of course there were cheers when Republican Brown, won the seat that had been liberal Democrat Ted Kennedy’s domain for decades. Seeing Red AZ joined them. But Brown is no social conservative.
Massachusetts Citizens for Life were supportive of Brown’s campaign and ecstatic with his victory.
But more tentative praise is being leveled by those such as Tobin Grant of Christianity Today, who views Brown’s triumph as a referendum against Obama and his leftward lurches.
Check Colson at Break Point carefully assesses the victory as “a paramount moral issue” of over-spending and out of control debt.
Brown’s state senate votes in Massachusetts on life issues can be seen here. National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League /NARAL (Pro-Choice Massachusetts) rated him at 50%, while Massachusetts Citizens for life gave him a paltry 33% in 2004, but that was up from his low of 8% in 2000.
Let’s hope his election to the U.S. Senate will bring him to a higher ground on this paramount moral issue.
“Let’s hope his election to the U.S. Senate will bring him to a higher ground on this paramount moral issue.”
Not likely.
In observation, if Republicans really uphold freedom, free markets and individual choice, then getting gov’t out of this issue compels ownership by which we can put our collective heads together and resolve to educate girls and women toward a more accurate choice in life.
When women have ALL the information available to them and ALL the choices available to them, supporting them toward development of personal responsibility can reduce abortion as contraceptive.
Gov’t out of it releases the hypocrisy of Republicans decrying limited gov’t but for our own personal agenda. But, instead, give way to true freedom and show that free market education can raise consciousness of society. As such, one day we will look back and wonder why roe v. wade even existed since very few, if any, abortions occur.
You’re probably right, ron, but since he knows where his bread is buttered these days (with the conservatives who put him over the top against Martha Coakley)I’d also like to think that issue might resonate with him.
This video tells the true story of how deep the support for Martha Coakley was. Scott Brown was the beneficiary of youthful stupidity. If he’s wise, he’ll know better than to think that vote that put him in the US Senate was a mandate! Most of these kids were not voting and didn’t have a clue who either Coakley OR Brown were. They were there for OBAMA.
Life is fundamental. When anyone, elected officials OR voters, believe that human life is a throw-away, we are ALL in trouble. Pre-born life or end-of-life becomes the same issue. It will be YOU or your loved ones, soon enough. Already the liberals (Robert Reich, for one) are saying it will be a mark of “good citizenship” not to ask for medical care when you are older than 65. Pills (to keep the pain at bay) will suffice, until the end comes. Sure, that might be 20 years earlier than it might have been without Obama-Care, but what the heck…
Will that work for you if it’s your parents? What if it’s YOU?
When it was first established in 1968, the acronym NARAL stood for National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws. What a nice middle-of-the-road organization.
As pro-life as I am, he’s still better than Coakley.
Sideliner…GR8 Video! Sadly, these children are simply products of their upbringing…which is evidently how the head muslim got to live @ th’ white crib…fo’ th’ bruthaz…
