Rumors have been substantiated and nationally POLITICO is now reporting that Paradise Valley resident Ben Quayle, son of former Vice President Dan Quayle, is filing papers today signaling his intent to run for the Congressional District 3. The post is being vacated by the retirement of U.S. Rep. John Shadegg.
Oddly, Ben Quayle’s announcement was made by his father:
“The big news is my son, Ben Quayle, today filed his papers for congressman in the Third Congressional District here in Arizona,” the elder Quayle said. “That, in the Quayle family, is big news. Marilyn and I are absolutely thrilled that he’s running for Congress. We hope that he does well. We’re convinced that he’ll be successful and we’re very hopeful that he’ll be the next congressman from the Third Congressional District here.”
Quayle, 33, is a Scottsdale-based attorney, licensed as a member of the Arizona Bar Association just last year.
Any activities Ben has engaged in within the Arizona Republican party have been stealth. He has not been interested enough to run as a Precinct Committee in Legislative District 11, where he resides.
The newly attracted political aspirant joins a crowded field. Among other Republicans who are eyeing the race are former state Rep. Sam Crump, former Sens. Pamela Gorman and Jim Waring and Paradise Valley’s appointed Mayor Vernon Parker.
Ben’s father, Dan Quayle, was even younger when first elected to Congress — a mere 29 years of age. He then went on to serve as George H.W. Bush’s vice president.
I might even vote for this guy if it keeps Waring out! It’s time for Waring to get a REAL job.

Thanks, SEEINGRED for a well researched factual article. It is refreshing to read a news article actually presented without snippy bias as I experience in the MSM and other blogs.
I imagine that he will have the advantage of the Quayle name and the fact that he has no known skeletons, however, his lack of involvement in the political arena is a definite disadvantage.
I personally prefer Crump because of his experience, integrity and lack of IOU’s to the establishment. It will be interesting to see how Quayle tries to sell himself to the voters as the preferred candidate.
I agree about the “real job.” Waring has either worked for McCain or been at the legislature. He’s never run anything. Never made a payroll.
But Quayle is another carpetbagger like Jim ward in CD 5. They blow into town with a bundle of money and think they can buy their seats. I live in CD 3 and I’m leaning toward Rep. Sam Crump. I heard him at the District 10 forum recently, and he is impressive. He’s a lawyer / small business owner and has served in the military. He struck me as knowledgable.
I need to find out more about the others. One of them sent a substitute speaker and the other wasn’t sure what he stood for. Quite an evening! They should serve brewskis to entice us to stay through to the end.
Hey LD10,
Then what is Vernon Parker? LOL.
I think he needs a real job too before moving on to Congress.
Quayle has many areas that we can question whether he is the person for the job or not, but he is not a carpetbagger. He has been in Phoenix, for three or four years, has two companies that he has ownership in, his parents and siblings live here. Ward meets the carptebagger moniker, but not Quayle.
I share BenF’s concerns that he has not been involved in the political scene here, but he is not the only one that fits that mold.
LD11 PC:
Parker gave the most equivical answer of the evening when asked who he would support in the U.S. Senate race between McCain and Hayworth. I actually felt sorry for him as he stumbled around trying to find the right words, not wanting to tick off the supporters of either man. In the end it was a lot of foolishness and no real answer. That doesn’t work for me. I support JD!
Well, again, I saw Mr. Parker @ the “FIT Trust” fundraiser for J.D. back in Nov @ Jason Rose’s place in P.V…but then he couldn’t make up his mind who to speak support for?!?!? Hypocrite!
Then he can’t make up his mind what office he wants to run for…Governor or Congressman? Please just go away, Vern…If you were the only candidate, I’d write in “Daffy Duck”.
Back to the Quayle candidacy. It’s very odd that he has never been around at anything within the party structure. No one I’ve spoken to in the last couple of hours has ever heard his name let alone seen him. Now wants to represent us in Washington? Lay down some time building trust and credentials first, Mr. Quayle. This is absurd!
Guys, what we are seeing here, this musical chairs scramble among people who really have no philosophical grounding nor conservative anything, is a DIRECT RESULT of the leadership vacuum left in the wake of the McCain machine’s top down control of the party AND attempting to anoint successors instead of grow good candidates through the ranks.
Politics as usual, at least as usual for the last 10 years, has to change or we can kiss a couple cycles goodbye to the dems.
LD 11 PC:
I think you’ve nailed the problem. In my opinion, Kyl, Shadegg and Flake are as culpable as McCain. They are all about recruiting their own obedient and grateful mirror images.
Shadegg was recruited by Kyl and lost whatever conservative credentials he previously had as he made his way through the hallowed halls of DC. Flake is yet another amnesty clone, who recruited his immigration lawyer brother-in-law to try to take out Sen. Russell Pearce. And who did they hire to do the dirty work? Non other than the belly dragging snake Nathan Sproul! Thank God, Nathan lost yet another round in his growing streak of defeats. Whether candidate or issue, hiring him is a guaranteed loss.
Quayle and Ward are the same. No longstanding roots (yeah, yeah, I know all about Wickenburg), easy money, big names glomming onboard. I suspect if you scratch young Quayle deeply enough you’ll find some McCain connections. Quayle needs to establish himself within the Republican ranks, introduce himself FIRST and make his own announcement. I’m tired of this crap. Quayle and Ward owe the people of the districts they want to represent a lot more than either of them are showing us. We are not peasants and they are not Lords.
My name says it all. I’d like to be able to vote for a conservative candidate and not be concerned that the opponent is there simply to lob off votes. I suspect Mr. Quayle, Esq. is there for that reason alone. It is so McCainvellian to put this young man with a credentialed Republican family name into the race to peel away votes from those who would dare run against McCain’s boy, Jim Waring. With so many in the mix, it’s a certainly this race will be won by less than 25 points. McCain is the lead puppeteer.
This is Dad in his infamous potato spelling episode:
You’re probably a school teacher – you know, the profession that had the spelling of potato written out in advance and displayed. It is much easier to join in with the MSM and hammer a conservative than to point out the obvious about the progressive, socialist, monopolistic educrats.
In addition, I thought that BEN Quayle was running. As Ben F said earlier, there are many reasons to question the candidacy of Ben Quayle, this non-germane attack is silly and superfluous.
Face the facts folks…
There is no strong lead candidate in this race. It is wide open. So mathematician style advisors are calculating a possible win to any comer to stir up a little business. Add a sprinkle of ego and low and behold another candidate.
Think I’ll start up a sign shop.
I was watching the local news tonight and heard Ben Quayle telling a reporter that he was surprised by his father’s announcement. He said he has no campaign apparatus in place. It was a phone interview, over the video of Dan Quayle showing a child that he was spelling the word potato incorrectly by leaving off the final “e.” The boy, in fact, had it right and VP Quayle was wrong.

What arrogance! He’s been silent, unseen and has never been interested in assuming any involvement in the party, and now he want our votes? A famous name is NOT enough! Show your face and articulate your views. Get some hands-on duty in the Republican party before you decide you’re going to earn my vote. Ben Quayle should be embarrassed, but I’ll bet he’s not.
Quite a few candidates don’t have party experience because their PC applications have been stalled for months, if not years. Many have given up.
Party participation goes deeper than that, though. LD poohbahs are trying to keep tight control over who can run for state and local offices as well as for LD leadership roles. There’s a lot of potential party activists who have turned to organizations such as ballot initiatives, school boards and tea parties because they can’t stand their local LD.
I look for candidates without long roots in the party because I believe there’s a chance they haven’t been corrupted. The best candidates seem to be outsiders. My LD just went through the appointment process. I voted without enthusiasm as it seemed like a ritual, not a true vote. When one of the candidates strolls in with a couple dozen proxies, does my single vote really matter?
