Majority of Arizonans favor SB 1070, results surprise pollster

These were the three questions asked by the Morrison Institute for Public Policy at ASU of 614 registered Arizona voters statewide:

1. Question: Should people be required to produce documents verifying legal status?

Among registered voters polled, 81% said they approve of the provision within SB 1070 that requires people to produce documents that verify their legal status.

2. Question: Should police be allowed to detain anyone unable to verify their legal status?

This provision of SB 1070 receives solid support, with 74% of respondents in favor of allowing police to detain anyone who is unable to verify legal status.

3. Question: Should police be allowed to question anyone they think may be in the country illegally?

Some 68% of voters surveyed in the poll favor the provision of SB 1070 that would allow police to question anyone they think may be in the country illegally when stopped as a suspect or arrested for a crime.

“What’s surprising is the level of support – overwhelming support among Republicans and strong support among Independents and Democrats,” said David Daugherty, director of research at Morrison Institute for Public Policy at Arizona State University which conducted the poll.

Although it calls itself non-partisan, the institute is clearly a bastion of liberal thought. It is headed by Sue Clark-Johnson longtime chairman and CEO of Phoenix Newspapers Inc., and senior group president of Gannett’s Pacific Newspaper Group. When she assumed her duties May 1, 2009, she replaced Rob Melnick, who left the position after more than 20 years to become executive dean of ASU’s Global Institute of Sustainability.

Check out its Board of Advisors. No wonder Morrison’s research director David Daugherty found poll results “surprising.”

Excellent post. Thanks for exposing who is behind this impartial group. I do have to give them credit, however, for going forward with the findings which are no doubt adverse to the group’s mindset.

  2. Kathy says:

This is only a surprise to those who don’t live in reality. Otherwise this is no surprise, only common sense.

  3. Lydia D. says:

So tell me again why the flip-floppin’, panderer extraordinaire to the US Chamber of Commerce and democrats, and Chief brown noser the illegal alien lobby John McCain was re-elected again??

  4. charlotteW says:

Lydia, you hit the nail on the head. As far as the poll is concerned, I did hear they overwhelmingly polled Dem, so the organization is quite upset over the results.

  5. Helen Post says:

Too sad….I’m crying crocodile tears for them, Charlotte.
Obviously, the study cost too much for them to sweep it under the rug when they got such unsatisfying results.

  6. Sarka Scarpulla says:

So the Constitution is situational. We can pass local laws that repress civil freedom but leave the rest of our founding principles intact?

Where are the libertarians on this? Where are the constitutionalists?

I thought I would never quote Glenn Beck but ” First they came for our Constitution…”
