Mayor Hugh Hallman won’t seek reelection: Where to now?

Calls himself a “conservative”

Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman has announced he will not be seeking reelection to the post he’s held since 2004.  Prior to being elected mayor he served on the Tempe City Council from 1998 to 2002. Clearly he has a yen for the political arena.

He’s also a headmaster of a public preparatory academy and a business law attorney.  He’s a professor, an economist and an author, as well as a husband and father. His list of charitable and volunteer involvement is impressive.

Mayor Hallman must also have a degree in time management. Check out his complete bio here. His Facebook page reads like a resumé. And although he calls himself as a Republican, we couldn’t help noticing that he boldly lists his political views as “conservative.”

Nice touch, Mayor.

His current term expires this coming year.  Where might this accomplished whirlwind go next? We’d like to suggest the U.S. Senate.  The People of Arizona are looking to fill their seat in Washington, D.C.

For Mayor Hallman to clearly delineate himself as a conservative is very appealing to me. This information has piqued my curiosity about him. I’d like to know his position on illegal immigration, which I consider a defining issue for numerous reasons — first and foremost the utter disregard of our laws by the invading hordes. They are coming from terror sponsoring nations as well as Latin American countries. If we don’t ensure our national security we are putting American lives and our nation’s future at risk. And let me be clear, the McCain/Kyl/Flake response of “we must secure our borders FIRST,” isn’t good enough. First always means before opening the floodgates through so-called “temporary workers,” which we certainly do not need. Also, those “temporary workers” have American citizens children while they’re here, providing access for the entire family. The establishment RINOs came up with the term “temporary workers” when their previous effort “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” was exposed as the amnesty it is, and was defeated by outraged American citizens.

Good points, Dad. If Hugh Hallman is half of what we see, (as a Phoenix resident, I admit I’m not that familiar with him) he would present a fine challenge to Jeff Flake, who is no conservative at all. Flake’s a Libertarian who knew he needed to claim GOP credentials in order to run for congress. Now, he’s changing his long held position on illegal immigration and playing the McCain bait and switch with us, thinking we’re easily fooled. If he runs unopposed for the US Senate, it will be a monumental disaster for this state. He’ll consider he has free rein to revert to his original positions and he’ll have a six year term to impose all of his previously held beliefs. Plus it’s titling at windmills to uproot a US Senator. His lobbyist contacts and Mormons across the country will keep the money flowing. He’s already amassing a lot of money from those same sources.

That’s not bluster about the LDS fund raising abilities. Mitt Romney has tapped into that exclusive well before and is doing so again. There is such pride in having Harry Reid in the senate that even conservative Republican “faithful” in Nevada open their billfolds for that slimy liberal.

  3. Standing Tall says:

A proud conservative gets my vote everytime! Please consider that Senate race, Mayor!

  4. Mad Gramma says:

Ask any Tempean and believe me we don’t think he is a conservative, we don’t like his endorsing Democrats and his number crunching abilities leaves something to be questioned as our property tax rise to pay for things that are cleverly hidden in the shell game so cleverly practiced by him and the Tempe City Council. NO NO NO let’s find a real conservative.

    • Vince says:

Interesting, Gramma. I’ll bet that’s not well known by most others in the Valley who are unfamiliar with Tempe City government.. But you’re right, Tempe has elected some very liberal mayors in the past. The not too bright liberal Harry Mitchell and homosexual activist Neil Giuliano spring to mind.

  5. Do the math says:

Do the math before you are too impressed. He has 24 hours a day, and even superman has to sleep. But Hugh Hallman does not have a cape, so he has to drive places, so minus sleep and transportation to his two jobs and THE TWO JOBS themselves, and the other basics in life, how many hours in his day are left? Which responsibilities/relationships get short shrift? Ask the people with whom he works, like the folks at the City or the school parents and teachers. Let’s get the real story. Is he, as Mad Gramma says, CLEVER?

  6. Villanova says:

Hugh Hallman is no conservative, He endorsed McCain.

  7. No state-wide for Hugh says:

Most of us will never forget that Mayor Hallman cracked jokes about Randy Pullen and the Party Platform to curry favor with the liberals so he could go uncontested in his last race.

He threw the conservatives under the bus, publicly. That only works once and it diminishes the conservative brand.

  8. Eric says:

Hallman has completely set Tempe on the right course. His negotiations stopped the use of eminent domain abuse during the building of Tempe Market Place. He went undercover to stop racism in the City instead of using the court system to abuse taxpayer money.

Hallman has lead the liberal City Council to make decisions that have placed the City of Tempe in a position of sound fiscal policy. (Taxes have gone down the last two years, by the way.) Ask Tom Jenney, if you want the truth.

Also, he could stay mayor as long as he wants, but he doesn’t believe an elected position is to be used as a life-time job, so he’s moving on.

Hallman is conservative to the core. His work has proven it.

Finally, “Endorsing” (giving a nice quote to) a Democrat in a non-partisan race is hardly cause for alarm. At least he didn’t donate to Harry Mitchell’s campaign like Tom Morrissey did.
