Tea party “Hobbits” give McCain an earful

“You are so out of touch, dude,” says attendee

The Ahwatukee Foothills News reports on what is likely to be an increasingly rare occurrence — a town hall meeting featuring John McCain. After all, he’s got five more years to stay disconnected from his constituents. Why does he need to hear a disgruntled throng of irate citizens take potshots at him?

McCain defended his insulting comments made last week in the U.S. Senate, where he read from a Wall Street Journal editorial referring to “tea party hobbits.”

But when called on the carpet for his disrespectful recitation, and asked to apologize, he innocently asked, “What apology is in order? What was wrong that I said?” Then he launched into liar overdrive, saying “It’s not my fault that it was misunderstood. I’m sorry that it was misunderstood.”

You weren’t Mr. McCain.  You were understood all too well.

“I will match my record as a fiscal conservative against anyone in the House and Senate, including the new members,” McCain said. “I have fought both the Republican and Democratic leaders on spending. I will defend my record.”

When asked about United Nations Agenda 21,* a fusion of socialism and extreme environmentalism strongly tinged with anti-American, anti-capitalist overtones, McCain fumbled and was jeered by some in the audience when he asked the questioner to elaborate.

“It’s a takeover of the United States,” a man said. “The UN wants to take over our farms. “You are so out of touch, dude,” another told McCain.

One audience member repeatedly called out, “Where’s our fence?”

Sean Hannity exposed McCain’s duplicity (video link) last week when he asked “Why are you attacking the Tea party?”

“I wasn’t attacking the Tea Party. What I was trying to point out was the Wall Street Journal was,” the not-very-straight-talking McCain answered with a straight face.

The 75-year-old aisle-crossing “maverick” has a long history of betraying conservatives, which he readily admitted by saying “I voted against my own party time after time. I‘m proud of my record.”

Yeah.  We know.

Every day I must live with the embarrassment that, as a resident of Arizona, the despicable AMNESTY-JOHN “represents” my state in the US Senate. At least I can proudly say that I did everything I could to help a real conservative win the primary.

  2. State Committeeman says:

Arizona voters are finally onto Juan McAmnesty. Unfortunately this “wisdom” came too late. They were able to have their votes purchased by the $30 million McCain machine when JD Hayworth would have provided us a conservative voice. Foolish egomanical little Jimmie Lee Deakins, a McCain dream come true, also aided by siphoning off a few votes to aid the old two-faced maverick.

  3. Army Of One says:

McCain’s a liberal fool, but those who put him back in office are bigger ones. His name ID resonated with newcomers to the state who know nothing about his deceptions. And senior citizens are conned by his self declared hero imagery. The unfortunate act of getting shot down and the terrible imprisonment he endured as a result does not make him a hero. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it’s fact. Heroism is defined as a selfless act. I’ve known a lot of heroes, men who were paralyzed, lost limbs, eyes, parts of their jaws or had their bowels spilling out. John McCain fulfilled his family dictate of military service, dumped the wife who waited for him and married an heiress to begin a well-funded political life.

What does McCain care he has another 6 years to screw us – thanks to those who voted for him. Notice he didn’t do this while campaigning – only lied, lied, lied.

  5. Annie O. says:

What people seem to be missing is that McCain, by reading this WSJ editorial on the floor of the Senate, has entered it into the Congressional Record. Slick McWilly just found a convenient way to get his real opinion into the record.
Obviously he’s no fan of the TEA folks because they were the main supporters of his opponent in 2010 (the REAL conservative by his lifetime voting record). And just as importantly, they are busting up the power of establishment Republicans like McShamnesty.
I remember from the Ring movies, that the Hobbits were the heroes that destroyed the ring. Go, TEA Party, Go!!

I was at this event. The audience was clearly exasperated with the constant repetition of “the Tea Party did great things for us in 2008!” followed by chastisement of what we need to do next. There was a clear sense of “we need you to vote for us and then shut up” from him. That said, most of the discussion was about the debt issue – I would have liked to see more questions from the audience on the need to scale back the functions of government. McCain gives lip service to this idea; I talked to him afterwards about how the GOP needs to more clearly define its message so that “compromise” means, “let’s talk about how much we’re going to cut” rather than “let’s talk about if we’re going to grow government a lot.” He brought up the need to follow the guidelines set forth by Barry Goldwater in “The Conscience of a Conservative” but didn’t say anything about how he’s working towards that goal. He also blathered on about the need to keep the Coyotes in Glendale which I found rather offensive. I don’t need a US Senator lecturing us on the need for corporate welfare from a bankrupt municipality

Overall, McCain did ok. There was clearly a sense of “he doesn’t get it” from the audience, but he did win some respect (although no future votes) for taking tough questions. The only time he seemed to start to lose his temper was when Kelly Townsend of Greater Phoenix Tea Party pressed him for an apology on the hobbit thing. McCain tried to dance around that like a prima ballerina..

    • Doc says:

Mr. McCain’s attempts at ANY apology are like “Th’ Fonz” trying to say he was “weeerr-wwwrrrooo-uuuhhh-wwwrrrooonnn…etc.”

…wrong. It won’t happen. The man is far too arrogant & rude for that…

  7. chick says:

John in a tutu. Interesting pic that would be.

    • Steve Calabrese says:

He HAS lost some weight. Looks better than he did in October. Still, if I have to see a McCain in a tutu, I’d rather see Meghan.
