Major endorsement enables concerned conservatives to hold Romney’s feet to the fire
With this announcement, Mitt Romney has given himself a bounce among those who question his commitment to securing our border and staunching the flood of illegal immigration into this country.
Kris Kobach, the dedicated legal wizard who aided former Arizona Sen. Russell Pearce in crafting SB 1070, declared his support for Mitt Romney with these words:
“We need a president who will finally put a stop to a problem that has plagued our country for a generation: millions of illegal aliens coming into the country and taking jobs from United States citizens and legal aliens, while consuming hundreds of billions of dollars in public benefits at taxpayer expense,” said Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. “Illegal immigration is a nightmare for America’s economy and America’s national security. Mitt Romney is the candidate who will finally secure the borders and put a stop to the magnets, like in-state tuition, that encourage illegal aliens to remain in our country unlawfully. He is also the candidate who will stand shoulder to shoulder with the states that are fighting to restore the rule of law. I am pleased to stand with this true conservative.”
Elected the Secretary of State of Kansas, Kobach was formerly the chairman of the Kansas Republican Party and a professor of constitutional law. Kobach has been a longtime advocate for immigration reform. He is the co-author of the Arizona and Alabama laws against illegal immigration, and he served as Attorney General John Ashcroft’s chief adviser on immigration and border security while at the U.S. Department of Justice. He has degrees from Harvard, Yale, and Oxford Universities.
Seeing Red AZ wrote about Kobach last year after his primary victory, givng him high marks for this grand quote: “Some people golf in their spare time,” Kobach said. “I defend American sovereignty.”
This endorsement will undoubtedly help Romney with those of us who are vitally concerned about his positions regarding illegal aliens. To be frank, any of the faith-based positions scare the bejeebers out of me. Devout Mormons (Romney and Huntsman) and Catholics (Santorum and Gingrich) who adhere to their church’s teachings on this contentious issue are undermining our national security, economy and jobs for our own citizens. The churches put water stations, and food packets in the desert to aid the illegal entrants in their lawlessness. They also promote lies regarding the “breaking up of families,” which are repeated ad nauseam. Going back home in no way prevents parents from taking their children, American born or not, with them. The real “breaking up of families” that goes unmentioned, occurs when Mexican men leave their wives and children at home while sneaking into the USA to find work, send a few checks home and then find a new honey here, who gets pregnant with a anchor baby. Adios Mexican family. Hola new family.
I wonder if Russell Pearce was instrumental in securing this valuable endorsement? He worked closely with Kobach. I’m a great supporter of Pearce’s, who I consider to be an American Patriot. This endorsement matters to me.
I was leaning toward Gingrich even with his “30 year residents” sob stories. This endorsement is a game changer for me. Romney is the only candidate remaining who outright opposes amnesty and supports completing the border fence.
The big knock on Romney has been “fluid” positions on conservative principles. But, on every issue he has moved deeper into the conservative’s tent. Can’t fault a politician for moving closer to my own convictions. Welcome aboard Mitt! And extremely electable too – so, he does bring something substantial to the table.
I agree with John McCain?? eeeewwww This makes me think there is another shoe yet to drop but given Gingrich’s non-enforcement policy and Kobach’s Romney endorsement…I’m convinced, for now.
Ron Paul: “Don’t build a border fence.” ’nuff said.
Gingrich is for non-enforcement. Paul is for non-enforcement. Romney promises “no amnesty” and complete the border fence. With Kobach’s endorsement, Romeny has won my support.
Our John Kerry…
He was FOR abortion before he was AGAINST it; he was FOR the individual mandate before he was AGAINST it; he was FOR appointing leftist activist judges before he was AGAINST it; he was FOR coddling ILLEGALS before he was AGAINST it; he was FOR the auto bailout before he was AGAINST it; he was FOR….
SO WHERE ARE THE SWIFT BOATERS WHEN WE REALLY NEED THEM ?????
Seems to me you wrote this same comment about Romney yesterday.
Two facts:
1. People’s views change. I’m proud to say that mine have over the years. That’s what maturity is all about. I was a liberal in college (and for a good number of years after) and a strong social and fiscal conservative today.
2. Romney is going to be our nominee. Stop working for Obama and let’s remember that this is our single chance to take back our country and protect our liberties.
Not a single candidate is perfect or as flawless as you apparently think you are. Newt Gingrich is a liar, a cheat and the king of deception. Santorum backed Arlen Specter. Huntsman is the epitome of a liberal. Perry is all but gone and Wrong Paul is a nut. As a conservative, I’m fine with Romney. And this Kobach endorsement is great news for me since our national security and illegal immigration are a paramount concern.
The problem with Romney is not what he says now. The problem is whether he will fight Obama the same way he’s fighting Newt Gingrich. I think not. I heard a clip of Romney excusing Obama as not a “bad guy” this past week!
There is no hope of Romney so much as lifting a feather in the immigration fight if he’s complimenting Obama like McCain did along the way. As a conservative, he may be as flawed as Santorum, but I imagine Santorum will have a little more nerve than Romney down the stretch.
Nothing Kobach has written has held up in court as he said it would.
A man is judged by his successes not his tries. A bill that can’t hold water may sound good but doesn’t help much where the illegals are concerned. Wonder if Kobach is a Mormon also??? Romney isn’t going to do a thing about the illegals if he gets elected, he is just like McCain. His record on all conservative issues is a liberal one. Don’t trust him, don’t like him… he is as slick as Slick Willie.
Kobach is not a Mormon. But it is interesting why you would ask that question? As if it would minimize the endorsement if he were. It is not as if Mitt Romney is only getting endorsed by Mormons and vice versa.
But I tend to agree with you on Kobach. I think he is a huge ego and not as smart as he thinks he is.
I disagree with you on Mitt. I applaud him for taking up the Republican cause against Ted Kennedy. I applaud him for being a Republican Governor in Massachusetts and sneaking in some conservative legislation despite having a legislature that was 85% Democratic. I think he did the best he could under the circumstances and would have been much more effective if he were the Governor of Texas or Utah like Perry or Huntsman.
Also, if we are so concerned about his position changes, Ronald Reagan had many of the exact same position changes. He turned out all right.
I liked a lot about Reagan but just remember that his biggest mistake was to give amnesty to illegals.
I asked the question about Mormons because their cult clearly has been behind ever illegal platform out there. Russell Pearce is the exception but he doesn’t lie like Romney and should distance himself from those who gathered to defeat him. Those were clearly the Mormons aligning with the illegals.
Romney says one thing and does another such as backing a pro-abortion judge, that was after he said he was against abortion…..Just one example among many.
I’m not sure Kobach’s bills being beaten and battered by scum like Susan Bolton (Clinton nominee) and the 9th Circuit is a true litmus test, especially since they mirror federal law. He’ll get his true day in court this spring at SCOTUS.
Lets just hope he wins.
