Winston Smith: Alive and well at Associated Press

George Orwell’s “1984”  Newspeak is in full bloom at AP

Claiming that “change is a part of AP Style because the English language is constantly evolving and enriched by new words, phrases and uses,” Associated Press has determined that in order to “use the most precise and accurate words so that the meaning is clear to any reader anywhere,” it is ditching the very precise term “illegal immigrant.”

Here at Seeing Red AZ, fixated on meticulous definitions, we will continue to use the clearly definitive term “illegal alien.”

The news came in the form of this blog posting authored by Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll on Tuesday afternoon, explaining that the decision is part of the company’s on-going attempt to rid their Stylebook of labels.

“The Stylebook no longer sanctions the term ‘illegal immigrant’ or the use of ‘illegal’ to describe a person. Instead, it tells users that ‘illegal’ should describe only an action, such as living in or immigrating to a country illegally,” Carroll wrote.

Her politically correct contrivance is reminiscent of Winston Smith, the protagonist in George Orwell’s best seller “1984.” Smith was employed as a clerk in the government’s Ministry of Truth Records Department. His job was to rewrite historical documents to align with the constantly changing current political deception. Newspeak, a reduced language became the tool to limit free thought and concepts posing a threat to the totalitarian regime.  Any form of thought alternative to the party’s construct was classified as “thought crime,” “crime think,” or “doublethink.”

Smith’s work included manipulating facts, revising newspaper articles and doctoring photographs to remove “unpersons,” the term used to describe people who had fallen out of favor with the party.

We conservatives are “unpersons” to the MSM liberals. But we still have a voice. We need to continue to use it.

When his book was published in 1949, Orwell wrote, “By 2050 — earlier, probably — all real knowledge of Oldspeak will have disappeared.”  He turned out to be a reliable prophet.

In December 2010 Seeing Red AZ reported that the Diversity Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists was calling on news reporters nationwide to stop using the term “illegal immigrant” in their news coverage.

At the time, this is how Fox News‘ Megyn Kelly responded to the word police on America’s growing obsession with political correctness:

The AP considers itself to be the world’s most trusted independent news source. Do you?

Using the analogy of Winston Smith and “Newspeak” is perfect! His job was to use words to deceive, just as the AP does.

  2. Observer says:

How interesting that the liberals at AP abhor “labeling” people and activities with which they sympathize. They have no such repugnance as they blatantly attack conservatives and their values. SRAZ has laid bare AP’s absurd double standard. The (press) Emperor has no clothes!

  3. Kent says:

Megyn Kelly is a great spokeswoman for conservatives. She was right back in 2010 when she addressed this idiotic doublespeak. And no, I don’t view AP as either a “trusted” or “independent” news source. Their liberal bias is nearly always apparent.

“Fox News revealed that radical liberal George Soros has deep ties with more than 30 mainstream media outlets, including the Associated Press. Much of his influence goes through ProPublica.”

“ProPublica was founded with a $10 million yearly grant from Herbert and Marion Sandler… The Sandlers are major donors to the Democratic Party and are top funders of ACORN, MoveOn.org, the American Civil Liberties Union and other far-leftist groups like Human Rights Watch.”

“One of Soros-funded Center for Public Interity’s leaders is Sandy Johnson, a longtime former Washington bureau chief of the Associated Press.”

    • Hometown Guy says:

What a tidbit! This news should be astonishing, but I see it as expected. The media has actually become an arm of the Obama administration. It was during his campaigns and remains so as he promotes his leftist agenda, with the complicity of what passes itself off as journalism.

      • eubykdisop says:

Since you expressed an interest in this, Hometown Guy, here is an article I can link to about it:

“JERUSALEM – The Associated Press is delivering to its subscribing 1,500 American newspapers content, it has emerged, penned by groups with financing from philanthropist George Soros and another far-leftist billionaire who not only campaigned for President Obama but also topped donor lists to groups like ACORN and MoveOn.org.”

“The AP announced last month it will allow its subscribers to publish free of charge work by four nonprofit groups, the Center for Public Integrity, the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University, the Center for Investigative Reporting and ProPublica.”

Note that the article is from 2009. Imagine what Soros has been up to with AP and the news media since then!

Not to be outdone by AP, Marco Rubio has stepped up to the plate with his version of a politically correct euphemism for “illegal alien”:

“In a similar linguistic concession, [Sen. Marco] Rubio, during Monday’s immigration news conference, referred to the ‘undocumented’ workers, a term generally preferred by Democrats and loathed by his party’s conservative wing.”

    http://newsbusters.org/blogs/clay-waters/2013/04/03/pro-democrat-labeling-fewer-illegal-immigrants-more-undocumented-ones-n

Should you be on the 2016 Republican ticket, Marco, remind me to stay home on election day!

    • Army Of One says:

So by virtue of this executive decision, the United States is no longer being invaded by hordes of criminals? How convenient. The fact is, the liberals running AP have every reason to feel emboldened by John McCain, Jeff the Flake, Marco Rubio. and their illegal loving Dems on the Gang of 8. Why these fake Republicans are intent on helping increase the Democrat’s roster…and get away with it, is beyond me. I join you in your frustration. I fear for my country, my children and theirs.

      • eubykdisop says:

        Hi, Army Of One! :-)

It’s kind of funny, Army Of One, because I have many times spoken of the “New World Order” and how it’s adherents are in the ranks of both political parties. In other words, the underlying paradigm is really no longer about Democrats versus Republicans but rather about the “New World Order” versus Conservatives.

I know that it’s difficult for people to wrap their minds around the “New World Order”, not because of any lack of intelligence on their part, but rather because of this:

“The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a Conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists. The American mind simply has not come to a realization of the evil which has been introduced into our midst.” – J. Edgar Hoover

Hoover was speaking about Communism but the same principle applies to the greatest current threat; the “New World Order”.

  6. DB Cooper says:

If those who are here illegally can’t be called illegal, what coy words would AP desire we use to describe murderers, rapists and arsonists? This liberal word play diminishes the actual meaning of words to the point that our language becomes pablum. One of the many factors that impacted our decision to remove our children from government (public) schools was when it was deemed “unfair” to give awards for scholarship excellence or athletic achievement, since that would have a negative impact on those who didn’t rank as high. When grades were replaced with Satisfactory and Needs Improvement, we went the Charter School route. Our kids got homework, which the government school ruled out. Our children also were graded. They realized that hard work and diligence paid off. Today they are successful college grads. Had they stayed in the non-judgmental world they would have had no incentive to achieve more than minimums. This is how the education establishment and the media dumb America down.

  7. Clementine says:

This line from Jay Leno best sums up AP’s “New WORD Order” :

  8. Braveheart says:

Amazing!!! The San Francisco Chronicle has already been calling illegal aliens “undocumented Californians” or simply “Americans.”

Jon Feere wrote this on his blog:

    http://www.cis.org/feere/ap-drops-illegal-immigrant-sf-chronicle-already-calling-them-americans

  9. Westnash says:

Agreed, SRAZ…it is very important “illegal” be used as the strategy of the enablers seems to want that word to go away when referring those that crossed the border without papers. Illegal immigrants is not a term that we should give up.

    • Seeing Red AZ says:

      Westnash,

Thanks. However, we go a step further in describing the foreign nationals who invade our country. In our view the word “immigrant” has a much more honorable connotation. Legitimate immigrants, who come to the U.S. through the proper channels are proud Americans and contributors to our system. They learn the language, do not march through American cities waving flags of their native countries and make threatening demands. They don’t teach their children that America is a nation ripe for takeover as they sap taxpayer-funded benefits. They don’t engage in criminal behavior as they deal in stolen, forged and otherwise counterfeit documents such as Social Security cards, drivers licenses and birth certificates to further their lives here. Seeing Red AZ will continue to describe these foreign national invaders in the most accurate of terms: “Illegal aliens.”

From time to time other commenters have used this instructive video. Were borrowing it for use today to illustrate what these “immigrants” are actually about:

    • eubykdisop says:

ROFL! You’re NOTHING but deception, Westnash, LOL! Here is what you have to say about immigration related issues:

      “Westnash says:

What I worry that the Secure Our Borders bunch really wants is to spend Billions more in hiring and fences which do nothing but increase the size of Govt.”

That’s just like Obama and Janet Napolitano, LOL!

      “Westnash says:
      March 12, 2013 at 8:36 am
I would be in favor of Arizona requiring Spanish (for legal students of course).”

And that is in perfect alignment with the goals of the radical leftist Reconquista moment, LOL!

      “Westnash says:
      March 13, 2013 at 3:18 am
No doubt, there has been much violence in Mexico but it is not constant and widespread.”

And you seek to whitewash the fact that Mexico is in the clutches of the cartels, LOL!

And here is what you had to say about Sheriff Joe Arpaio who apprehends illegal aliens and who is the target of an attempted recall by the Liberal left BECAUSE OF his enforcement of immigration laws:

      “Westnash says:
      March 1, 2013 at 9:06 am
Interesting that when you have someone like Joe who continues to hang on…you have a real vacuum behind them. Their ego just wont let them develop a successor. Joe should retire soon and develop a strong successor…but I am afraid hubris has set in long ago.”

ROFL! You’re not fooling anyone, Westnash. We have your number, LOL!

      Have a nice day, Westy!

  10. Steve G. says:

I prefer to expand the definition to its full extent:
    “illegal alien parasite”

  11. Not Fooled says:

The driving force behind this AP decision it the idea that those who control the language shape the debate. Don’t fall prey to letting the left control your free speech by trying to be politically correct and using their terminology simply because it is what you hear from commentators and read in the news. This is not so subtle brainwashing. Seeing Red AZ is right on the mark comparing this to Orwell’s “1984.”
