Member of the Phoenix Union governing board could face up to 6 months in jail and fine of up to $2,500
The Rev. Jarrett Maupin II, an Al Sharpton protégé and former Phoenix mayoral candidate, was arrested this afternoon on misdemeanor charges of making a false report, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
Maupin, 21, ran against Mayor Phil Gordon in a 2007 contest but was bumped from the ballot after the County Clerk’s Office determined that nearly 185 of the signatures that sealed Maupin’s spot in the race were collected by convicted felons.
Sheriff’s officials did not immediately reveal the nature of Maupin’s false allegation against Gordon, other than to say Maupin took a complaint about Gordon breaking the law to sheriff’s deputies.
A subsequent investigation showed Maupin lied about the allegation and about having proof of the allegation, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, according to a report in the daily.
