Just in time for tomorrow’s national tax protests, Citizens Against Government Waste has released its yearly Congressional Pig Book Summary. The 2009 edition is chock full of infuriating “earmark” expenditures.

The outrage of millions of taxpayers following the $700 billion bank bailout and the $787 billion stimulus bill did not stop Congress from passing and President Obama from signing a bloated $410 billion Omnibus Appropriations Act in March. With the subsequent approval of the President’s budget, the national debt will triple over the next 10 years. That leaves plenty of opportunities for pork to remain pervasive in the nation’s capital.

Democrats far and away dominate the big-spender list nationally, but there are enough Republicans who have signed on to pork barreling projects to make us ashamed, as well. In Arizona, the names Gabrielle Giffords, Raul Grijalva, Harry Mitchell, Ed Pastor – Democrats all – excel in shameful spending sprees.

Rankings by state are here.

And here are the 2009 Oinker Awards, which recognize “dogged perseverance in the mad pursuit of pork.”

If you’d like to let Arizona’s congressional top spenders hear from you, Seeing Red AZ has thoughtfully included their contact information:

Good information and links. I intend to call each of these Dems in the morning.

  2. What do you know? says:

Just reporting back with some information: I called each of the offices and was asked where I lived, which I gathered was so the office personnel could make certain I was a constituent. None of them wanted to talk to me without an address giving them assurances I lived in the congressional district. How interesting. Don’t all of our tax dollars pay all of their wages?
