Gunning for the Sheriff: The Republic’s last quest

In what has become the lifeblood issue for the failing daily newspaper, today’s front page carries its latest and most vicious assault on Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Page One provides the appetizer for the vulgar banquet, with a four column by 11-inch unsmiling photo of Arpaio, and a short teaser, under the headline: Show of Force, which they characterize as A Republic Special Report. You get the drift.

Open to two full pages of unflattering prose and photos. The Republic’s Dan Nowicki, assigned to flatteringly cover McCain during the presidential election runups, is ensuring his employment as the paper gurgles its last breaths.

Like others before it, the article is filled with photos and quotes from a lineup of Arpaio’s amnesty-bent foes, along with short takes on his “trusted staffers who help craft his image.”

Today they use the double-barrel approach by bolstering the vile mega-spread with an equally brutal editorial.

This effort to take out popular Sheriff Joe Arpaio — reelected in November to an unprecedented fifth 4-year term  — is appalling.

Here is Arpaio giving the best advice on what to do with this newspaper.

Joe Arpaio will have my vote as long as he runs! During elections, this newspaper’s endorsed candidates mostly lose, proving no one much pays attention to what they have to say.

I liked Arpaio’s video clip at the end of this post. Excellent!

I get down on my knees every day and thank God that He gave me the clear thinking ability to cancel my subscription to the garbage can liner many years ago when their lying bias first offended my senses. I am so much happier not having to see that garbage every day.

  3. Joe Evans says:

Someone previously commenting on this site questioned the journalistic standards of this newspaper. Your question has been answered. They are nonexistant!

This newspaper is on its last legs. It’s shrinking in size and pink-slipping employees. Recently it even dropped its TV guide insert giving readers an option to purchase it! The news is recycled from other venues and the local stuff is crap. The editorial staff leans so far left they could fall over. They promote illegals over citizens and when one reason (we need the workers) fails, they concoct other ones (we can’t break up families). This is their last ditch attempt to get the sheriff. It won’t work.

It’s time for the “when is the Republic FINALLY going to close it’s doors” pool to get underway. Any takers?

  6. Kent says:

Name the terms, Sherri. I’m in. Are we going for a month and year on this?

I recall the days when I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the thud of the AZ Republic in my driveway in the early morning. I relished reading the editorial pages that actually featured local editorialists who were thoughtful conservatives — Bill Cheshire and John Kolbe come to mind — along with those who showed a reasoned Democrat bent — rather than serving as bomb throwers. The newspaper had style and principles. Whether or not a reader agreed with the commentators, there were other vantage points presented that made people think, and sometimes even persuaded a change in attitude.

Today’s Republic is rightly called the Repugnant with an agenda driven editorial staff honed under Keven Ann Wlley and Richard deUriarte — both thankfully having moved on to other ventures — and now with Linda Valdez, Phil Boas, and E.J. Montini holding down what’s left of the fort. The daily newspaper has atrophied to the point where it appears to require life support. I’m sorry its demise won’t sadden me a bit, something I never thought I’d say.

The current publisher, managing editor and editorial staff have chosen the path of destruction the paper has embarked upon. Sayonara.

As to Arpaio: Sure, he has an ego. Show me a politician, of either party, who’s had an egobotomy. He does his job and does it well. He is admired by those of every background and ethnicity. I know many who think Arpaio is the greatest.

Most importantly, Arpaio wins his elections, despite the constant drubbing he gets from the newspaper. That’s what rankles the folks in charge at the Arizona Leftpublic the most!
