Ten days ago John McCain responded to TPM reporters inquiring into his view on the issue of rescinding the birthright citizenship provisions of the 14th Amendment: “Do you support the Minority Leader’s [Mitch McConnell] push for hearings into the repeal of birthright citizenship?” asked the reporter.
“Sure, why not?” responded McCain..
Fast forward to yesterday. Dancing the long practiced McCain two-step, the zany senator gave a different response to the same question. McCain now says he is not requesting hearings into the constitutional amendment that grants automatic citizenship to babies born in the United States to parents here illegally, and does not support changing the Constitution. An estimated 400,000 anchor babies — one in twelve — of all babies born in the U.S. last year were born to illegal aliens.
Such a madcap guy, McCain is. Always keeping us on our toes.
The U.S. stands alone among industrialized nations in granting citizenship to all children born on its soil. No European nations grant birthright citizenship. Only these nations do.
