Powerful union lobbyist father pulls support from Stanton’s campaign
Mindy Shields, daughter of Democrat operative, powerful lobbyist and former fire fighter’s union boss Billy Shields, has pleaded guilty to the theft of $77,134 while treasurer of Greg Stanton’s campaign. Stanton intended the money in the Friends of Greg Stanton account to be used for his mayoral race.
With a plea deal Mindy Shields faces a lesser Class 6 felony sentence of up to 2 years in prison rather than the originally charged Class 2 felony, which carries a maximum prison term of 12.5 years.
Sentencing of Melinda Jeannette “Mindy” Shields is scheduled for September 19.
When Stanton realized he had been the victim of massive theft and she admitted to being the culprit, he said he hired an accountant to make sure the account was repaid. And wouldn’t you know? Most of the money was mysteriously “restored” — by her parents. Daddy is now calling that restored money “a loan.”
At one point, lawyer Stanton who went to work for then-Attorney General Terry Goddard after leaving his council position, wanted the embezzlement charges against the daughter of his powerful friend dropped. But criminal charges, once filed, are not contingent upon the victim’s change of heart — or in this case, a reevaluation of the impact on his future campaign fundraising. Any Democrat candidate with hopes of filling his campaign coffers doesn’t want Papa Shields as an enemy — even though he was “stunned and saddened” by the revelations regarding his sticky-fingered daughter.
And Papa Shields? Obviously not thrilled by the turn of events, Billy endorsed Democrat Stanton’s opponent, Claude Mattox in the mayor‘s race.
