Church leaders who supported ObamaCare now outraged

“The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield, and government to gain ground.”  – Thomas Jefferson

The Obama administration’s U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has imposed a new mandate putting it at odds with the Catholic Church. It requires all employers — including faith-based ones — that offer health insurance, to provide and pay for all forms of contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs. The mandate will force Catholic hospitals, schools and charities, as well as other religious groups to provide these drugs despite their opposition to them.

Nationally, Bishops say the rule compromises religious freedom. In fact, the battle has raged so intensely that Catholics across America heard about the new provisions as they attended mass this past Sunday in a letter read from the pulpit addressing the church’s stance against the impending federal requirements.

Previously the government has created a “conscience clause,” allowing for  exemptions from regulations going against core beliefs.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has issued the following response to the February 2 post on the White House blog in which it takes the Obama administration to task. Read White House misrepresents its own contraceptive mandate here.

Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is outraged and urges Catholics and the public at large to contact congress in protest. Here he can be seen in a video criticizing the Obama administrationThis is the letter by Bishop Thomas J. Olmstead, Bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix that was read to Valley parishoners.

Yet the synchronized outrage raises questions of hypocrisy. Federally imposed ObamaCare first came to the public’s attention in 2009 as legislation introduced in both houses of Congress. At the time, Catholic Charities, the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, and the Catholic Health Association — three major Catholic charitable groups were vigorously supporting the newly introduced ObamaCare and rallying the faithful to contact Congress to help pass the legislation. This letter to members of Congress on USCCB letterhead not only urged support of ObamaCare, but specifically advocated for health care for “undocumented persons” calling it “mean-spirited” to do otherwise.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue is threatening that 70 Million Catholic voters are ready to alter the 2012 presidential election. And the USCCB is promising a lawsuit over the Obama provisions.

They appear to be learning too late that socialism is inherently evil. And when government creates “a right,” it can tell the people how to exercise it.

    …no offense, but…uuuhhh…

    …like RATS from a sinking ship…

That sed, if this is allowed to stand…that’ll do severe damage/destruction to the 1st Ammend….once that’s done…th’ rest’ll fall like DOMINOS…socialism, baby…”Something WICKED this way comes.”

Will our elected officials get up offa’ their hands, NOW?!?!?

  2. Matt DeGennaro says:

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ sanctimonious outrage underscores why so many leave the church. They have not only supported Obama, his socialized medicine scheme, and the illegal invasion, but aid and abet them ALL. Now when they don’t like specifics in the dastardly health care plan (which overburdens our nation, will include age and condition based restrictions and undercut our core values of individual responsibility), they howl. These deceivers deserve what they get!!! The rest of us DON’T!!!!

    • American Dad says:

Exactly!! The Church was first in line to put its stamp of approval on Obama’s socialized medicine for America. Now when some of the provisions stick in their craw the bishops yelp. How do they pay for their own health care and treatments with their vows of poverty?

      • garvan says:

Excuse me, but the Church didn’t put her stamp of approval on Obama’s socialized medicine.

A renegade bunch of LIBERAL BISHOPS put their stamp of approval on it.

My advice to every Catholic living in a diocese headed up by one of these liberal bishops: instead of putting money in the collection basket, put in a note explaining how much Obama’s presidency has hurt you.

Then add that you’ll start putting in money again as soon as your pastor and the bishop publicly rebuke Obama and everything he stands for.

  3. Rambling Rose says:

As democrats peel away from Barack Hussein Obama, he’ll employ a “fix’ for the Health Care legislation that will ensure his reelection. Then, when he’s safely returned to office and not facing any other elections, he’ll bring back the same provisions that are causing such a riot now. As my Mama used to say, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!!”

  4. TeaPartyPatriot says:

obozocare isn’t about healthcare. It’s about lunatic-left d-cRAT socialist CONTROL of one-sixth of the US economy, lunatic-left d-cRAT socialist WEALTH AND INCOME RE-DISTRIBUTION, lunatic-left d-cRAT socialist EXPANSION OF ABORTIONS WITH TAXPAYER MONEY, lunatic-left destruction of the Catholic Religion and every other Christian religion that opposed it’s dictates and unlimited lunatic-left d-cRAT socialist NANNY STATE COMMANDS and RULES for the American people.

In addition to being an insult to the US Constitution, obozocare is an affront to the American people. It must be removed, along with each and every lunatic-left d-cRAT socialist that supports it.

Our new president, along with the new Republican controlled House and Senate must, as their first official act, repeal obozocare, then tear it up into a million pieces, burn the pieces, bury the ashes and cover the burial site with 1000 tons of concrete.

    • Tomfoolery says:

If only. Once it’s implemented, it will be impossible to get past the dependency pigs to empty the trough at which they are feeding. Know this: the costs will be higher, the care will be less and fewer of us will qualify for treatments readily available today due to government mandated restrictions.

    • garvan says:

The House is already controlled by Republicans, and we know all funding for government programs must be initiated in the House.

But under the weeping wimp John Boehner’s leadership, the Republicans have merrily funded the initial elements of Obamacare.

Every American is in essence being held hostage by the voters of Indiana.

Let’s do some serious prayer and fasting that Boehner gets primaried out!

  5. Army Of One says:

Here is what Clinton adminstration liberal Robert Reich said an honest presidential candidate would say if he/she was being straight with American citizens about health care. Young people would pay more, older people will die sooner….watch this and understand what’s really in store for us:

  6. Jane says:

Yes, the Catholic Church has itself to blame, and they’re still on the wrong side of several social issues.

Still, evangelicals need to add a few cars to this train and ride it while it’s going in the right direction. Everyday this administration does something to destroy American life. I just think churches need to drop their non-profit status if they have to and speak up. Being quiet about government is misguided.

    • Orion says:

You’re absolutely right about the tax exempt status enjoyed by religious organizations. It needs to go — for a wide range of reasons. Foremost is being held hostage to the ol’ mighty dollar in exchange for losing your voice. The Catholic church, for one, is exceedingly wealthy. Had it not been paying out hundreds of millions for the pedophile priests molesting young boys, they would be even richer.

  7. Clementine says:

Glad to see it pointed out here that the Catholic Bishops were strong supporters of Obama, along with every leftist issue to come down the pike. Funny that now they don’t like what they got while supporting this Godless marxist. What did they expect? But I agree, that he’ll pull back on this mandate in order to win election now that the church is threatening to withhold votes. I’m curious just how much sway the church actually has with its flock. Do they all march in sheeplike lockstep? I sincerely doubt it. I know many divorced Catholics and imagine most use birth control, also against the church teachings..

  8. Maureen O. says:

Remember when Notre Dame University invited Barack Obama to give its commencement address and presented him with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree? He is the most pro-abortion president this country has ever had. When he was in the Illinois state legislature, Obama was the only member to vote against providing basic medical care to babies born alive as a result of a botched abortion. The church now reaps what it has sown. The hierarchy looks foolish protesting the healthcare mandates when they went hook line and sinker for all the rest of the liberalism, including supporting this obscene man.

    • Dennis O'Brien says:

True. Although many students opposed Obama coming to give the commencement address and be honored, the administration of the university supported it. Guess who won?

    • garvan says:

I’m old enough to remember when Notre Dame was a Catholic university. It hasn’t been for decades.

So don’t hold it against the Church that UND’s nincompoop president, Fr. Jenkins, invited the pariah to speak at Notre Dame.

Jenkins was absolutely giddy at having Obama come, speak and get a degree.

I hope he now realizes he was a total fool.

  9. Hagar says:

So fun to watch the Catholic bishops squirm. They support every left-wing cause the liberals propose (e.g. illegal immigration). It’s nice to see them get bit in the butt.

  10. west1890 says:

Two old adages come to mind…

“Be careful what you wish for…” and ” If it sounds too good to be true…”

Have to agree with Hagar. Remember the fable about the scorpion and the frog? Never trust Obama the scorpion.

  11. vinoaz says:

It is disturbing when bishops and priests cannot recognize evil. It is worse when they commit or condone evil. They compromised on the gay lifestyle and sexual abuse in the priesthood. They condone and support illegal activities, they cozy up to the dehumanizing evils of Communism and Socialism under the guise of social justice and I suspect they will slide into the abyss on abortion and gay “marriage”. Guess they forgot the command to fight evil. I do not see the clergy or “faithful” rising up in any significant numbers. They have been dumbed down and for many, their real religion is liberalism and liberalism is a moral disorder
