Barack inhaled…and then some
Buzz Feed’s Gavon Laessig provides a comprehensive overview via excerpts from the latest book on Barack Obama.
This one is a doozy — complete with numerous photos of a doobie smoker, who not only inhales, but demands car windows be rolled up so none of the smoke is lost. In his own 1995 autobiography, Dreams From My Father, he writes of his cocaine use (“maybe a little blow”), boldly stating he had not tried heroin simply because he did not like the pusher who was trying to sell it to him.
Even the most fervent liberal supporters of the 44th President of the United States will feel queasy reading the excerpts from David Maraniss’ Barack Obama: The Story.
An accomplished marijuana enthusiast in high school and throughout college Obama was deeply immersed in an elaborate drug culture. He inhaled. A lot. The book comes complete with testimonials from young Barry Obama’s school chums, a group that went by the name “the Choom Gang.”
Choom was slang for smoking marijuana.
Maraniss concludes his chapter on Obama’s high school years with a telling note Obama had written in his high school yearbook in a section reserved for students to give a line or two giving thanks to those who helped along the way
Obama wrote this: “Thanks Tut [his grandmother], Gramps, Choom Gang, and Ray for all the good times.”
Maraniss notes: “Ray was the older guy who hung around the Choom Gang, selling them pot. A hippie drug dealer made his acknowledgements; his mother did not.”
