This less than a breath-holding moment will never make the annals of stunning news. The Periódico de la República de Arizona (Arizona Republic) has endorsed in the race for Maricopa County Sheriff. And the newspaper’s choice? A Democrat. Any Democrat.
The editorial makes no bones about the newspaper’s never concealed position as it states, “Democrats need to pick the candidate with the best shot at defeating Joe Arpaio.”
In promoting the little known Democrat Paul Penzone, on whom they have staked their hopes the editorialist writes “He’s the best candidate the Democrats have had in their quest to unseat Arpaio. He deserves their support.”
Not exactly a rousing endorsement.
Apparently the newspaper has suddenly honed a fondness for domestic violence offenders. In 2003 Penzone was involved in a domestic violence altercation using his then 10-year-old son’s hockey sticks as he and his wife Susan slapped one another around a bit at her Glendale home when the two were separated. The police report can be read here. Although Arizona has a mandatory arrest law when injuries are present in cases of domestic abuse, neither Penzone nor his estranged wife were detained. He was employed as a sergeant with the Glendale Police Department at the time, and Phoenix Police responded. Both Penzone’s are now remarried to others.
In addition to the domestic violence issue, it’s no secret Penzone, who acted as a spokesman for the Silent Witness program, lacks the administrative experience to run Arizona’s largest sheriff’s office and the nation’s third largest law enforcement organization — employing over 3,400 people and capable of housing up to 10,000 inmates at any given time.
THIS is popular Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio — a man with impressive career credentials and married to the same woman for over 50 years. In 1992, Arpaio successfully campaigned to become the Sheriff of Maricopa County. Since then he’s been reelected to an unprecedented five 4-year terms. During his tenure as Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arpaio has consistently earned high public approval ratings.
He’ll win again….regardless of who runs against him.
