Jeff Flake apologizes for son’s vile slurs
Earlier this week, we read on BuzzFeed that Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake apologized for his son Tanner’s online spew of vile racist, anti-Semitic, and homosexual slurs. The 15-year old, who should certainly know better, was even vicious in his insults of the very Hispanics his dad is working so hard to legalize. Tanner calls Mexicans “scum of the earth.” The teenaged Flake, who bragged about being the senator’s son, also participated in an online game using the moniker “ni**er killer.” He referred to Jews as joke stealing thieves.
Tanner obviously needs some lessons in taking responsibility. He‘s old enough to be making apologies himself rather than having his Daddy do it for him. “I’m very disappointed in my teenage son’s words, and I sincerely apologize for the insensitivity,” Flake said in a statement. “This language is unacceptable, anywhere. Needless to say, I’ve already spoken with him about this, he has apologized, and I apologize as well.”
Although we never heard Tanner’s apology, there is also a lesson here for Papa Flake. You can only apologize for your own actions. Apologies are not transferable.
The older Flake learned of the content on his son’s Twitter account after Buzzfeed contacted his office on Wednesday.
Jeff missed a few teachable moments on his recent four-day trip to an uninhabited island. This time he took his two younger sons Tanner and Dallin along on his survivalist gig. No TV, no computers or video games, no cell phones…seems like an ideal time for an all-too-often missing, beltway-situated Dad to instill some values.
