Jeff Flake apologizes for son’s vile slurs

Earlier this week, we read on BuzzFeed that Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake apologized for his son Tanner’s online spew of vile racist, anti-Semitic, and homosexual slurs. The 15-year old, who should certainly know better, was even vicious in his insults of the very Hispanics his dad is working so hard to legalize. Tanner calls Mexicans “scum of the earth.” The teenaged Flake, who bragged about being the senator’s son, also participated in an online game using the moniker “ni**er killer.” He referred to Jews as joke stealing thieves.

Nice kid.

Tanner obviously needs some lessons in taking responsibility.  He‘s old enough to be making apologies himself rather than having his Daddy do it for him. “I’m very disappointed in my teenage son’s words, and I sincerely apologize for the insensitivity,” Flake said in a statement. “This language is unacceptable, anywhere. Needless to say, I’ve already spoken with him about this, he has apologized, and I apologize as well.”

Although we never heard Tanner’s apology, there is also a lesson here for Papa Flake. You can only apologize for your own actions. Apologies are not transferable.

The older Flake learned of the content on his son’s Twitter account after Buzzfeed contacted his office on Wednesday.

Jeff missed a few teachable moments on his recent four-day trip to an uninhabited island.  This time he took his two younger sons Tanner and Dallin along on his survivalist gig.  No TV, no computers or video games, no cell phones…seems like an ideal time for an all-too-often missing, beltway-situated Dad to instill some values.

Ya think?

Hmm-m…This makes me wonder what the conversations are like around the Flake dinner table? How could Jeff Flake not know his son was a braggart and bigot?

    • Clark says:

I agree Maggie. A kid doesn’t just start throwing out those kinds of statements unless they have been exposed to it either at home or the friends he keeps.

  2. East Valley PC says:

I’d be humiliated to have any of my children using these bigoted insults, let alone thinking it was acceptable to do so publicly! But I expect I spend more time with my family than the ambitious politician Jeff Flake does with his. Something has to go when you spread yourself this thin and home is nothing more than a stopping off point. In his case what went was Tanner. What a sad commentary on the entire family dynamic.

  3. Frankly Speaking says:

Tanner needs a tanning! And since I never heard a public apology from this spoiled twit, I can only assume he apologized to his father for causing him political discomfort. Quite a lesson Jeff Flake sends his son, when he apologizes for him while covering the kid’s prejudiced lily-white ass. Great teaching moment gone to waste, Jeff. The lesson learned is superficiality works.

  4. Arizona Conservative Guy says:

I’m not surprised the kid is a bigot. His father has to be politically correct to the point of ruining our country in order to promote his own career. You can see how far he will go by his obsessive licking of McCain’s boots. McFlake presents another gag-able snapshot of himself and his parenting techniques. My dad would never have apologized for any of his children. He would have made sure we did our own apologizing that people could actually hear.

  5. Orion says:

So Flake is “very disappointed” in his son’s “unacceptable” language? Swell. How about a PUBLIC apology from this kid? Who did this spoiled brat apologize to? His father? Or to his own reflection in the mirror? This sounds more like, “Gee, I’m sorry I got caught and embarrassed you, Dad.”

…as if his suicide video wasn’t enough. There is no way this doesn’t reflect on Jeff Flake. The more he tries to spin this, the less confidence voters should have in him.
