As Obama sets Syria in his sights…..without Congressional approval
Democrat Biden, then a U.S. Senator, was talking about Republican President George W. Bush at the time, but it’s worth listening to his words again, in the current context involving Barack Obama.
Intent on military intervention following a deadly chemical weapons attack on civilians in Syria, Obama is encountering resistance from both America’s allies and Congress.
This letter, signed by 116 House members — including AZ GOP U.S. Reps. Paul Gosar, Matt Salmon, David Schweikert and Trent Franks — urges congressional authorization before ordering the use of military force. It states, “While the Founders wisely gave the Office of the President the authority to act in emergencies, they foresaw the need to ensure public debate — and the active engagement of Congress — prior to committing U.S. military assets. Engaging our military in Syria when no direct threat to the United States exists and without prior congressional authorization would violate the separation of powers that is clearly delineated in the Constitution.”
