Shutdown? We’ve been through this 17 times before

83% of federal government continues to operate

The Government “shutdown” — of course the government doesn’t actually shut down — is generating a lot of negative coverage from the left-leaning media, with the blame placed squarely at the feet of the GOP. Rarely is it mentioned that there have been 17 previous such events since 1976 and that Democrats used the procedure eight separate times against President Ronald Reagan, alone. Let’s face it. The serious business isn’t the so-called shutdown. It’s the fact that we are running headlong toward default if Obama continues to refuse to negotiate over raising the debt limit. Obama, a hard-line partisan, will speak with Iranian dictators, but refuses to sit down with Republicans and discuss how he is mortgaging our children‘s future. For a sobering reality check, click here. In 2011 CNS News reported Barack Obama had increased the national debt more than all previous presidents combined. This Treasury Department site goes back to 1869.

16.  Nov. 13 to 19, 1995 (5 days): President Clinton (D) GOP controlled both chambers

17.  Dec. 5, 1995 to Jan. 6, 1996 (21 days): President Clinton (D) GOP controlled both chambers.

It’s been 17 years since the last government “spending gap.” It’s clear to see that Republican presidents have been subjected to “shutdowns” more often than Democrats. And government workers always get paid for their furloughed days.

Byron York reports that only 17% of government employees are actually affected by this hyped “crisis.”

  1. Realist says:

Clearly, the debt limit showdown will separate the conservatives from the socialists. However, regarding the current “shut-down”, I was under the impression it isn’t necessary to close any government operation because the money is there to fund all government operations through year 2013.
Obama is simply showing his ass by throwing a temper tantrum and taunting conservatives with shutting down the parks and memorials.
If this is the case, why am I not hearing it articulated by any conservative in D.C.?

    • Vince says:

The DC contingent has been far too meek on many such issues. But know this….they are still focused on screwing us by promoting amnesty behind the scenes. Good luck on getting a rational response from any of the Republican US Reps as to why they want help to broaden the democrat base. They’ll give us a lot of lip about being “inclusive,” but it all ends up to doing the GOP in.

On the senate side, we are getting a royal assault from Jeff Flake and John McCain, who are leaders of this partnership with the democrats. Flake is not new to this deception. He was onboard the amnesty train with his Chicago cohort Luis Gutierrez when they served in the US House together. McCain has always been for amnesty. Ditto Jon Kyl.

Well, actually, Realist, we ARE hearing it from Conservatives in D. C.! How?

Darrell Issa wanted the court to continue work on the Contempt of Congress lawsuit against Obama and Eric Holder over “Fast and Furious”.

“The motion insisted that a “Contingency Plan provides that Department employees may continue to work on matters necessary to the discharge of the President’s constitutional duties and powers,” and therefore his actions against President Barack Obama and the Justice Department should not be affected by the federal work stoppage.”

      What did the judge say?

“Judge Jackson responded, “There are no exigent circumstances in this case that would justify an order of the Court forcing furloughed attorneys to return to their desks. Moreover, while the vast majority of litigants who now must endure a delay in the progress of their matters do so due to circumstances beyond their control, that cannot be said of the House of Representatives, which has played a role in the shutdown that prompted the stay motion.”

So the judge is saying to Issa, quite openly, that because the House hasn’t caved to Obama, he is going to refuse to allow work on the Contempt lawsuit EVEN THOUGH Issa has pointed out that, under the law, the work on the case MAY continue!

I would say that the circumstances surrounding “Fast and Furious” are about as “exigent” as circumstances can get!

With Obama currently refusing to negotiate to cut spending as a condition of raising the debt ceiling, what are the possible outcomes? We can default on our debt OR we can give Obama a free hand to spend without limit. The big secret is that either way, Obama wins! How?

We all remember when Cyprus seized the money of private individuals right out of their personal accounts. Why did they do that? To lower the unsustainable debt they had incurred! Has any other nation jumped on the bandwagon? Why, yes! A nation which is part of the EU and a NATO ally; Poland!

    “Poland’s Piggish Pols–They’re Not Alone”

“Poland has pulled a destructive stunt worthy of Argentina. It is seizing half of the Polish people’s private retirement funds. All government bonds in these pension-plan portfolios are being forcibly transferred to the government. Since the bonds are no longer held by investors, the government is declaring that the national debt has been reduced by the face value of those securities. Neat trick, including the spin on this Soviet-style seizure: The government is calling the nationalization a “pension overhaul.” The ghosts of Stalin and Lenin must be smiling.”

“Barack Obama must be wondering why he hadn’t thought of something like this and may be tempted to try such a scheme here. It’s so delicious to a socialist: Seize Treasury bonds and declare them null and void. Some Washington socialists, a.k.a. Democrats, have already made noises about getting their hands on a portion of the assets held by individuals in IRAs and 401(k)s. The Administration floated such an idea earlier this year, suggesting that the size of these retirement plans be restricted.”

So let’s look at this through the eyes of B. Hussein Obama! What are the possible scenarios from his point of view?

1 – Congress caves to his demand to raise the debt ceiling, without any spending cuts, and he continues to spend the U. S. into financial ruin. Ultimately, to bring down the unsustainable debt, Obama, like Cyprus and Poland, seizes all or a portion of your retirement account, savings and checking accounts!

2 – Congress refuses to cave, Obama doesn’t budge, and we are about to go into default. Then, like Cyprus and Poland, Obama seizes all or a portion of your retirement account, savings and checking accounts to prevent default!

Either way, we have Socialist “redistribution of wealth”, which is Obama’s goal, along with the financial ruin of Capitalist America.

What we need to understand is that Obama doesn’t play according to the rules. He breaks the rules, and the law, at every turn to implement his agenda “by any means necessary”. Things which you thought to be “safe and secure” are no longer “safe and secure”!

Another fine analysis of our dire situation under this committed Marxist posing as a US President!

      • eubykdisop says:

Thanks, F.S.! I could be off about the exact circumstances of how it comes to pass but I have little doubt that Obama will seize private money. Much brighter and more experienced financial minds than mine have come to the same conclusion. ;-)

And, speak of the devil, look what we have!

“Social Security Warns Benefits Could Get Cut”

“By Damian Paletta, October 7, 2013”

“The Social Security Administration has begun warning the public it cannot guarantee full benefit payments if the debt ceiling isn’t increased.”

“When asked by the public, the agency is notifying beneficiaries that “Unlike a federal shutdown which has no impact on the payment of Social Security benefits, failure to raise the debt ceiling puts Social Security benefits at risk,” according to a person familiar with the agency directive.”

Let’s analyze this in purely financial terms. Obama wants to SEIZE a portion of Social Security benefits to reduce the debt and/or prevent default!

Good job of putting this farce in perspective. Thanks.

Question….Does anyone know what became of “pcrcPC,” who used to comment here frequently? I miss the banter and spirited exchange of opinions.

Have you checked over at “Daily Kos”? Attacks on Adam Kwasman, who voted AGAINST Brewer’s Medicaid expansion, and on our superb Attorney General, Tom Horne, are much more popular with readers there than with the Conservative readers of this blog.

“Government gives $445 million to Corporation for Public Broadcasting on first day of government slimdown”

“By Hollie McKay, October 08, 2013”

“LOS ANGELES – Funding for clinical cancer trials and other life-saving research under the National Institutes of Health was cut off in response to the government slimdown, but it looks like the cookie monster will still be knee-deep in chocolate chips (or is it carrots now?)”

“According to the Daily Treasury Statement and first reported by CNS News, the administration dished out $445 million to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) on the first day of the slimdown, which means funds for the likes of PBS Newshour, NPR and “Sesame Street” are being spent before cancer research.”

This should not surprise us at all IF we clearly understand that B. Hussein Obama is a Communist. First and foremost, he needs to keep his propaganda machine up and running, especially to spin the shutdown and debt ceiling issues. This is right in line with Communist ideology:

“A lie told often enough becomes the truth.” – Vladimir Lenin

Why is “Sesame Street” so important to Obama?

“Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted. Give us the child for 8 years and it will be a Bolshevik forever.” – Vladimir Lenin

Commies ALWAYS target the kids because they want to shape young minds from scratch rather than trying to change older minds which have already been polluted by Capitalist ideas.

Why would Obama be concerned about people dying from cancer when he wasn’t concerned about those who died as the result of “Fast and Furious” and he isn’t concerned about killing children, who are not yet born, in the womb?
