Barack Obama and his family will ditch the cold and wet weather in Washington DC as they leave this Friday for a much needed 17-day Christmas vacation in Hawaii.
The Obama’s and their entourage traditionally spend the holiday break in a luxurious home on Oahu with spectacular ocean views. For the past three years, Obama rented a $24,500-per-week private, gated Plantation Estate, on the white sand beach of Castle Point Kailuana in KailuaBay.
White House Dossier reports that Michelle Obama revealed that she and Barack don’t give one another Christmas gifts. They merely say, “We’re in Hawaii,” and that’s Christmas gift enough. But actually the present is from taxpayers, and it’s an expensive one. Keith Koffler writes the total cost to taxpayers of Obama’s vacations to Hawaii since becoming president — excluding the upcoming trip — “is likely in excess of $20 million, and possibly much, much more.”
Air Force One is known to cost about $180,000 an hour to fly. Based on an estimated 18 hours roundtrip flying time for the jet between Washington and Honolulu, the travel cost alone of Obama’s decision to return to Hawaii amounts to around $3.24 million. And that doesn’t include the price tag for the massive security operation required to move the president or the cost of the cargo plane that follows Air Force One around.
Meanwhile, the national debt approaches $17.3 trillion — nearly $6 trillion of which was racked up in the first term of the Obama presidency –– a 50% increase on Obama‘s watch. View the ticking national debt clock and its impact on YOU.
The tone-deaf and egocentric Obama’s, who don’t even take a stab at feeling the pain affecting so many Americans, will depart Dec. 20, after what is expected to be a light work week. Not the White House blog has a satirical overview of the upcoming vacation. And if you’re having trouble with your holiday gift list, be sure to visit the White House Obama Store.
