Indicted! Austin & Logan Flake, Todd & MaLeisa Hughes

Felony & misdemeanor charges filed against Sen. Jeff Flake’s son Austin, wife Logan and her parents

Four long months after the heat-related, suffocation deaths of nearly two dozen dogs at a Gilbert kennel, the owners and caretakers have been charged with multiple felony and misdemeanor counts. An indictment was handed down Wednesday by a Maricopa County Grand Jury.

The Grand Jury should be commended for diligently considering the evidence and doing the job it was impaneled to do —- conducting its business, without regard to politics.

Todd Hughes the owner of the boarding facility, has been a bad actor throughout this despicable saga, lying about the number of dogs involved and initially claiming they merely ran away. The story was later changed to cast blame on the dogs themselves by alleging one or more of the pets chewed through the air conditioning wiring. Hughes and his wife MaLeisa were vacationing out-of-state and left their daughter Logan, and son-in-law Austin, to oversee the care of the pets.

When the Flakes’ returned to the kennel the next day and witnessed the horrific scene, they callously hosed down the dying dogs in a crude attempt to cool them. The carcasses of the dogs were then piled in a storage shed. No professional veterinarians were called to help.

The dogs sweltered to death, packed together  in a steamy utility room, lacking air-conditioning, and without food or water provided for them.

After deputies responded to a call the morning of June 21, 2014, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office launched an extensive investigation and submitted its findings to the County Attorney’s Office on August 27, 2014.  This is Montgomery’s Sept. 10, follow-up press conference. The indictment charges Todd and MaLeisa Hughes with 22 felony counts and 7 misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals, and one felony count of fraudulent schemes and artifices. Austin and Logan Flake are each charged with 21 felony counts and 7 misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.

A hearing for the four defendants is scheduled Oct. 23, 2014.

anybody know what the maximum penalty they face is?

    • Linda Gray says:

My understanding is 1.5 years for each felony animal abuse conviction (although multiple convictions of felony abuse may carry sentences to be served concurrently, so they could see, at most, 1.5 years for all 20+ abuse felonies) and 10 years for the felony fraud conviction. So THANK YOU, grand jury, for including that fraud indictment!

Good…so far. Let’s see how far down these charges are pled in a plea deal. I previously read that one of the “punishments” the kennel owners and the Flakes could receive is not being able to own dogs in Maricopa County. If that’s a possibility, it’s far too weak for what their flagrant lack of care resulting in these needless deaths warrants.

Just try imagining the phone calls between Bill Montgomery and his pal Sen. Jeff Flake in advance of this news.

…montgomery’s a “spaghetti-thrower”; throw it & see what sticks. But considering th’ players listed…these idjits’ll walk away with nuthin’!

Just watch. Montgomery is going to go soft on this slugs after finally trying to look like a prosecutor who won’t tolerate this awful criminality. Bottom line? He has to decide which part of his future is most important…the one where the voters are the primary consideration or the one where he lets Team McCain, which surely includes Jeff Flake, run his decision making. He wants to have this both ways and that is a virtual impossibility. I wonder how many ‘consultations’ he’s had on this matter. He really muffed it with his press conference when he said the dogs weren’t children and then used to occasion to beat up on two other Republicans he doesn’t like. Deflect. Deflect. Deflect.
Bill Montgomery is nothing more than McCain light. We trust him at our own peril.

DuVal articulated his position on parental consent at a public forum Tuesday at Redemption Church in Gilbert, Ariz.”

Which “church”? Please vote against this #£¥. This is not the type of leader for AZ. Is there a single democrat or liberal with a shred of ethics or morality? As for punishment–summer will be here before we know it. Working on the chain gang will give them time to meditate on what disgusting, lying, cheating, incompetent imbeciles they are. Let’s find two real conservatives to run Flake and McCain out of the senate.
