Illegals? Word police vandalize CA newspaper office

“Worst ever” headline “dehumanizing,” “creates hostile atmosphere”

So here we are mere days from the terrorist massacre perpetrated against the French

publication, Charlie Hebdo. Twelve people were slaughtered and eleven others wounded after the satirical newspaper provoked Islamic ire for running a caricature of Muhammad.

Now, in the U.S. where the First Amendment protects free speech, we read that vandals in California have used spray painted graffiti to deface the building which houses the Santa Barbara News-Press. At issue is the word “illegals” in a headline accompanying a report about the state of California granting driving privileges to people who entered the U.S. illegally.

The News-Press’ front-page report was titled “Illegals line up for driver’s licenses.”  It was accompanied by a photo depicting waiting lines at the DMV. With the passage of Assembly Bill 60, California motorists can now obtain a driver’s license without proof of legal residence.

Kudos to Donald K. Katich, the News-Press director of news operations, who boldly states that the newspaper has used the term ”illegal” for nearly 10 years and it is appropriate.

“It is an appropriate term in describing someone as ‘illegal’ if they are in this country illegally,” he said, adding, “When breaking the law becomes the norm, America is no better than other lawless nations.”

The headline led to a protest staged in De la Guerra Plaza, a small park adjacent to the newspaper. About 100 people turned out, including members of the group People Organizing for the Defense and Equal Rights of Santa Barbara Youth. They seek to assert editorial control by demanding the paper “retract” the headline, apologize and adopt Associated Press style, which, since 2013, has sanctioned variations on the word illegal, including “living in or entering a country illegally or without legal permission.”

Seeing Red AZ covered the AP imposed Newspeak in this 2013 post. Count on this site, fixated on meticulous definitions, to continue to use the clearly definitive term “illegal alien.”

Illegals and their liberal cohorts despise being outed as illegal. Why the hordes illegally invading the United States even have “supporters” is a mystery.
I applaud the decision by the Santa Barbara News Press director of news operations Donald Katich to use and continue to use the applicable word, “illegals.”
The radically leftwing Arizona Republic never saw an illegal they didn’t embrace.

Unfortunately, the invasion supporters are not only far left ideologues in the Democrat Party but they are deeply embedded in the GOP,(think McCain, Kyl, Flake and many in our congressional delegation) now poised to sell us out with the foolish notion that the illegals will gratefully become Republicans, which will not happen.

Most disappointingly the faith based communities have become corrupted as they push for legitimizing illegals for their own benefit. Overall church attendance is down and illegals, who are given support, will likely attend those churches that aid their invasion efforts. Many Mexicans are abandoning Catholicism in favor of evangelical Christianity and unexplainably more than a few are converting to Islam.

More than 1,000 are leaving the Catholic church on a daily basis. Among them are those who now profess no religion.

The LDS Church, which my immediate family left after generations of deep involvement, is doing major recruitment among Hispanics, with many missionaries learning Spanish and being sent to Mexico, Central and South America to proselytize new converts. Three of my nephews are so engaged. And look no further than the fact that Hispanics are the fastest growing group of Mormons coming to the faith.

This attempt at stifling free speech should concern us all, regardless of where we stand on specific issues.
