Tonight’s CAP gala could have tense moments

Doug McDucey among featured speakers

The much-anticipated Center for Arizona Policy (CAP) “Reclaiming Hope,” high-dollar soiree at the Arizona Biltmore Resort this evening will be memorable for even more than the keynote address by noted conservative author and commentator Dr. Charles Krauthammer. Also scheduled to address the attendees is Gov. Doug Ducey.

CAP’s president Cathi Herrod endorsed Ducey during his 2014 campaign and extols him on the Center’s website, saying his “priorities are growing the economy, creating jobs, improving outcomes in K-12 education, and balancing the budget. A committed husband and father, Gov. Ducey stands on his pro-life, pro-family values.”

It’s those last words, “pro-family values,” that could well be giving Herrod a case of buyer’s remorse. Again, from the CAP page advertising the event, are these words: “In 2008, Cathi led the YESforMarriage Coalition that spearheaded the successful passage of Proposition 102 to define marriage in the Arizona Constitution as only the union of one man and one woman.”

Herrod is a lawyer and successful lobbyist, with many conservative, faith-based, pro-family victories under her belt. But she was dealt an unexpected blow by Ducey earlier this week when he reversed Arizona Department of Child Safety adoption practices that blocked same-sex couples from adopting or providing foster care to children in Arizona.

In his statement Ducey said, “I have made it abundantly clear since day one that my administration is unambiguously and unapologetically pro-adoption. With 17,000 children under the state’s care, we need more adoption in Arizona, not less. That’s why I feel strongly – as I have said many times before – that all loving families should be able to serve as foster parents and adopt. I also have said my administration will follow the law.”

Ducey added, “Practices have been brought to my attention that do not match those priorities, therefore, I’m instructing the Arizona Department of Child Safety to immediately ensure that all legally married couples in Arizona are able to jointly serve as foster parents and adopt. All children deserve a loving home, and under my watch, I’m committed to making sure government encourages that.”

Ducey also stuck his finger in the eye of another former endorser, Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, when he vetoed legislation (HB 2296) supporting Montgomery’s practice of denying free legal aid to same-sex couples seeking to adopt.

Though this fact might have flown under Herrod’s radar, while attending ASU Ducey worked for Hensley & Co., Cindy McCain’s Anheuser-Busch distributorship. His longtime relationship with the McCain’s has obviously influenced his political persona.

This is not the first time Herrod has been disappointed by the cabal with whom she has worked to develop a good relationship. Let’s hope it’s the last. This linked post is from Nov. 2013.

  1. Arizona Conservative Guy says:

As a longtime McCain protege, Ducey has been trained to “disappoint” conservatives. Knowing how toxic he is to conservatives, McCain wisely kept his fingerprints off of him during the campaign. Jon Kyl worked in his stead as Ducey’s lead policy adviser. When will conservatives wise up to their slippery chicanery?

    • LD 23 PC says:

Republican true believers get what they deserve by marching in sheep-like unison to keep reelecting the same crooks and liars. Our party is in dire need of a political transfusion.

  2. Not A McCainiac says:

“Let’s hope it’s the last”?? Cathi Herrod needs to stop ingratiating herself to those RINOs she regards as powerful. By this point she should know all too well that their word on anything is completely worthless. She has enough stature on her own without stooping to give them endorsements. When she endorses she influences a lot a voters who read and follow her voter guides. She bears some responsibility for Ducey‘s ability to engage in this trickery.

  3. East Valley Conservative says:

Ducey is tied at the hip to McCain. He’s a shrewder and more educated version of Jan McBrewer, but like her, he follows the McPlaybook to a “T.”

The fact that McCain-endorsed Kirk Adams is Doug Ducey’s Chief of Staff brings this full circle. Fortunately, McCain’s endorsement of Adams didn’t help him win the congressional seat he was seeking. It ended up being a detriment.

    • Vince says:

I had completely forgotten this McCain endorsement. Ducey obviously takes his marching orders from the very senior senator. Lisa Graham Keegan was also McCain’s education policy advisor and is now Ducey’s go to gal on education. What a coincidence!!

  4. Clementine says:

Barronelle Stutzman’s presentation will be of great interest to those who see the destructive, normalizing instrumentalism of the homosexual establishment on society in general and our children in particular. Having same-sex ‘marriage” advocate Doug Ducey on the same platform with this heroic woman, who was the center of a homosexual firestorm that intended to destroy her, is nothing less than a slap in her face. I hope Ducey is “called away on business” tonight and won’t be able to attend.

  5. Conservative Since Birth says:

If we ‘retired’ McCain – the politics in this state would be less corrupt.

  6. ZOO says:

The question is now that Ducey has waved his scepter and changed “practices” at ADCS for adoption, what provision has been put in place to counsel prospective children being sought by same sex couples? That seems to be a huge can of worms in itself.

  7. Hometown Guy says:

They call this a ‘CAP Family Dinner,’ but what family can afford the prices? Since I looked earlier today, they’ve taken down the price lists. Who attends these functions? it can’t be regualr familes when the meals alone (minus costs and fundraising aspect) are $90 per plate. A bit outta my league…

  8. Hagar says:

CAP and Herrod are frauds. I recall the days when its website linked to a book store which promoted anti-Mormon books. Only after realizing that the Mormon votes in the legislature were required for its agenda did the link disappear. .

  9. SmallGovt says:

I see the CAP issues are all those which are not focused on economic issues. Ducey probably sees this as well and understands that as Arizona turns into California east and increasingly goes Democrat, they can only be lip service and not primary focus. I didn’t see a ticket price for last night event:

While there are a number of issues that impact families, Center for Arizona Policy works on a focused set of issues.

    •End of Life/Denial of Care

    Marriage & Family
    •Parental Rights
    •School Choice

    Religious Liberty
    •Rights of Conscience
•Free Speech Rights of Churches and Pastors
    •Student Religious Freedom

  10. SmallGovt says:

Maybe you should have a SRAZ event with a famous speaker and reasonable ticket prices in a show of strength against McCain. This might be the first step in some decent opposition for him.

    • Casper says:

SRAZ is a blog, not an organization. Since you are so full of good ideas, why don’t you put it together and fund it yourself?

      • SmallGovt says:

Thanks for your support. New ideas may be difficult for you so how many tickets would you like?

  11. LEO IN TSN says:

Mrs. Herrod and the CAP had done some great work over the years for US, and I had been a big supporter. Sadly though, when she hit the Big Time she decided that trading off values to accommodate big money donors was the way to go. This embracing of RINO McDucey and the McEstablishment agenda is no surprise after the way she hid in the closet over the issue of “free” gov’t-funded and mandated access to abortion (also known as Medicaid Expansion). She decided her loyalties to her personal friend, former Gov. Jan McBrewer, were more important than family values and the sanctity of innocent human life. She hid while her friend and a handful of contemptuous RINOS illegally pushed it through in the dead of night.

Now McDucey is her guy. Homosexual adoption of innocent kids must be Mrs. Herrod’s new family value. McDucey’s rationalizations over his sell-out to a cabal of sub-culture terrorists who might be potential political supporters of his sometime in the future certainly ring false. He obviously has no concern for the kids if he would force them into this destructive sub-culture. He obviously is ignoring all science to throw these poor kids into the garbage heap. McDucey is worse than a mere sell-out, because he is betraying the innocents he swore to protect just to buy some potential dirty votes. Welcome to the new McGOP.

    04/22/2015 Family Research Council:
The Rev. Paul Sullins, Ph.D. highlighted research showing that children raised by same-sex partners demonstrably have less hopeful outcomes emotionally, educationally, and professionally than those raised by a mom and a dad. For example, as he wrote recently in his FRC study, “Emotional Problems among Children with Same-Sex Parents: Difference by Definition,” “Emotional problems were over twice as prevalent for children with same-sex parents than for children with opposite-sex parents.”

We’ve got McDucey because McTraitor bought the election by duping the low-info voters again, and because too many “R’s” are scared to death of conservative candidates. We’ve got what you elected.

God bless those poor little kids. God bless America.

  12. Gov. Ducey is preparing for a much larger political playing field than AZ has to offer, I’m come to this conclusion by his Vetoes and Support of issues not popular with AZ Conservative Voters, we have an upcoming Presidential Election Cycle at hand and believe he’s positioning himself to be a player at a National Level in that he’s already tied to McCain is apparent, now all we need to do is see who he ties himself to as a Presidential Candidate supporter, believe so far it’s Walker, but that to may change to Rubio, which ever way it goes Gov. Ducey believes his moves are going to move him up the GOP National Ladder, so don’t depend on him for any real Constitutional support until after that’s settled.
    God Bless You All; Van

    • SmallGovt says:

As Arizona becomes more of a Democrat state, most likely he is evolving into someone who can be reelected. He is not going to be President or VP. McCain’s toughest opponent in 2016 is most likely to be a Democrat.

      • Not referring to him as being Pres., however VP is possible or other appointment similar to Napolitano, many didn’t see that coming as well and she didn’t even deliver the State but did give Obama support, now as to McCain if Conservatives can’t find someone who understands the issues at depth and is able to communicate them as well without a script to the general public we’ll have him again.

  13. SmallGovt says:

Not gonna happen. You will only see ethnic males and females as VP for Republicans. McCain may want Ducey to run for his seat in the future or self appoint himself if McCain dies first. Non of this takes into account that the Democrats likely have other plans: Sinema, Giffords/Hubby, Napolitano!
