Joe Arpaio needs to view larger picture, act admirably

Newly released political poll should not be taken lightly

Finding a knowledgeable Republican in Maricopa County who doesn’t hold former Sheriff Joe Arpaio in high esteem would be a tough task. To call the career lawman, who retired as head of Arizona DEA prior to being elected to an unprecedented six-4-year terms, “popular,” would be the height of understatement. He even does a decent rendition of “My Way,” and means it.

When Sheriff Joe Arpaio was introduced at Maricopa County mandatory meetings, the elected precinct committeemen in attendance reliably gave him a standing ovation, from the time he left his seat in the packed auditorium until he strolled to the stage to address them. No other county official commanded such support.

But now the man known fondly as “Sheriff Joe” has got a problem. Nothing will soften the hard facts. Having just celebrated his 86th birthday, Joe is running for the U.S. Senate. He is also losing support. The seat is open due to Trump-hating Jeff Flake’s inability to rise above 18-percent approval ratings. Flake ditched his reelection campaign rather than risk the embarrassment of being kicked to the curb by Arizona voters.

Though Arpaio was an early supporter and has remained loyal to President Trump — who carried the state of Arizona in 2016 — winning all 11 electoral votes, age is not on his side. Arpaio vows he’ll only run for a single term, but by then he’ll be 92. That detail should be a deal breaker, but Joe Arpaio is intent on staying in the race.

These facts are worthy of note due to this recently released survey from Phoenix-based Data Orbital. The numbers are telling. According to data gleaned from 550 likely primary voters, Martha McSally (frequently referred to on this site as ‘Sally McCain’) holds 38% of the vote compared to conservative former state senator Dr. Kelli Ward at 23% and Arpaio at 17%. Undecided voters factor in at 21%.

Do the math. If Arpaio exited the race and threw his support to Ward, the scenario would change dramatically, with Ward leading at 40%. McCain ally McSally, who even emulates his crude speech, is battling her own problems. Waiting at the General Election altar is crafty chameleon Kyrsten Sinema, who has magically transformed herself into a soft-spoken, sympathetic candidate from her previous incarnation as a foul-mouthed, atheist, refusing to take her oath of office with her hand on the Bible. Sinema derided stay-at-home mothers as leeches, sent May Day greetings to the Communist Worker newspaper, and was heralded as the first openly bisexual member of congress, She was a frequent guest at the Obama White House.

The Arizona Primary Election is rapidly approaching. This election is too important to screw up. Dr. Kelli Ward, a physician with conservative principles, is the rational choice in the August 28, 2018 Republican Primary. Joe Arpaio needs to do the right thing and retire. A longtime and reliable public servant, he’s earned it.

I’m a big Sheriff Joe fan, and one who has always given him a well deserved “Standing O,” but I agree with this assessment. By staying in this race he’s harming Kelli Ward, the most winnable conservative candidate. I have always supported him, but won’t be this time, though it troubles me to say so. But facts are what they are, and they have been detailed well in this SRAZ post.

  2. JCF says:

I, too, have been a dedicated fan and supporter of Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Often have I described him as the sheriff many counties in the US wished they had. But his present endeavor is selfish and self-serving at the least. Is his rationale to collect campaign monies to continue to support persons who he have been or are working for him? He is a politician who understands thoroughly the import of his extremely low polling numbers. If our state will be represented by Rino McSally and her below 50% voting record or Democrat Kirsten Sinema, Joe Arpaio’s reputation and well-deserved respect earned will forever be tarnished at the least, or erased. For the sake of Arizona and a much respected and needed representation for our national government, the sheriff should bestow this major gift upon the citizens of our state who have heartily supported him for a quarter of a century – withdraw this candidacy and give total support to Dr. Kelli Ward!!

  3. Michael Schmitz says:

According to polls at Real Clear Politics, the Ward supporters plus the Arpaio supporters beat the McSally supporters by 1 point well within the MOE.

As much as I admire Sheriff Joe, he’s got to go if we are to get a real conservative to run against Sinema. McSally has an “F” rating from CR.

  4. Saguaro Sam says:

I appeal to Sheriff Joe to do the right and honorable thing—-step away and throw your support to Dr. Kelli Ward.

Martha McSally is using the same playbook as did McCain:
    Promise the Veterans the moon.

Even Kirsten Sinema, in her slick and expensive TV ads, is pandering to Veterans.

This is exactly how we got stuck with McCain.

And these two chicks, McMartha and the swinger, look like career swamp dwellers.

  5. Arizona Conservative Guy says:

There is a definite consensus here, Everyone admires Joe Arpaio, and everyone wants him to support Kelli Ward.
If he endorsed her, his admiration level would soar even higher among Republicans.

Haven’t we had enough of bogus Republicans in the US Senate claiming to represent Arizona citizens and working overtime for illegals and voting for bloated budgets? That’s what we’ll be getting with him fracturing the votes, but it will be shoveled at us by a Democrat.

So-called “Maverick” McCain is at the end of his trail, and Obama’s pal Jeff the Flake showboats by slamming Pres. Trump at every opportunity. These two liberals ran as Republicans because they knew they would benefit from that affiliation in AZ. Then they proceeded to kick us in the teeth and vote with liberals.

If anyone here has any sway with Sheriff Arpaio, please explain the seriousness of allowing Kyrsten Sinema to be elected to the U.S. Senate. Joe is facilitating that by staying in this race. Conservatives who have stood by him for years will never forgive this ego driven last hurrah. At 86, he needs to enjoy life with his lovely wife, Ava,

  6. LD 23 PC says:

After an exceptional career, being known for siphoning votes from Dr. Ward will be a legacy Joe should not cause himself to be remembered for.

No amount of outside harm can undercut him more than this race and the awful but easily predictable outcome. I’ve always supported Sheriff Joe, but won’t this time around.

  7. D.B. Cooper says:

Sheriff Joe is a smart man. Surely he knows his candidacy for a six year senate term is preposterous at age 86. I can’t help but think he’s being used as a money train by selfish advisers who want to squeeze every last cent out of managing his campaign. In office or out, Joe has always had a loyal following, nationally as well as statewide. That translates to donations and someone is getting a percentage.

Joe needs to fire the hangers on and support a conservative who can win. That’s Dr. Kelli Ward.

Agree. Sadly Joe is arrogant and self centered. Part of the reason he lost the last election. He cannot win this election. For the good of AZ and America we must all support a strong conservative who can win. Joe, you have to help. Drop out. Sinema is leading the polls. We have to defeat her.

    Hear Hear!

One reason “sheriff” Joe is no longer “sheriff” is people like me are sick and tired of his crap and won’t pull the lever for him *ever* again! Don’t go away mad, don’t be vain, just go away!

Do the right thing and support Dr Kelli Ward.

If we end up with Sen Sinema, it will be on your soul!
