Matt Salmon lacks traction, withdraws from AZ Governor’s race

Former Congressman and current gubernatorial candidate has thrown in the towel on his bid for governor. The oddly timed move comes a week before early ballots, with his name on them as a candidate, are mailed out.

“I am so proud of everything that we have been able to accomplish together over the past year. I’ve been blessed with the best staff members, volunteers, and activists in Arizona, and I will forever be grateful for the tireless work and heart-felt passion that they gave to this campaign. Our ideas changed this race for the better – there is no doubt about that.

Unfortunately, numbers are numbers, and it has become clear to me that the path to a first-place victory is no longer a realistic possibility. Republican primary voters deserve more than having their votes split on August 2nd, and so I am leaving this race for the same reason that I entered it: Because it is what’s best for the people of Arizona.”

His complete statement, addressed “To my supporters, the best in Arizona,” can be read here.

Best guess is Salmon will endorse Karrin Kunasek Taylor Robson, who gave him a warm send-off. Kari Lake, lacking the grace to say goodbye, has been mum.

  1. East Valley Conservative says:

Kari Lake speaks volumes with her silence. Matt Salmon has political credentials. She has an ego. Even assuming she was glad to see him go, she could have assumed a pose of decency.

  2. Sally Forth says:

Lake can’t even have a staffer write something decent? My God! She’s showing more of herself with this inaction than I expected. No class.

  3. Realist says:

Kari Lake was an Barack Obama supporter. Do you think BO congratulated President Trump on his 2016 victory?
Matt Salmon withdrew from the race, so the situation is somewhat different, but the lack of decency is on par. How hard would it be for this airhead to wish him and his wife Nancy well? Pettiness is never attractive. My pup knows how to offer his paw and say, “thank you.”

  4. Vagabond says:

I’m definitely a Trump fan…but I wish he’d stop endorsing people he really has no knowledge of. Lake now has head-shots of him side-by-side on the roadways,

  5. Sam Fox says:

    No Lake? Who then?

    • The Loan Arranger says:

Looks like the best bet (of a paltry bunch) is Karrin Robson the insider who calls herself an outsider. What’s so bad about admitting you have connections and can afford to pay whatever it takes to get elected?

      • one who knows says:

Hey Loan Arranger – does that mean you will vote for Peter Thiel & Co? $13.5 million for his guy….WHO THE HECK IS ADVISING TRUMP???

        I pick Mick!!!!

      • lowadobian says:

Agree! I asked the same thing when the likes of Lake became his darling. Partnering with Facebook Co-founder, largest Facebook individual shareholder & Board Member until 2 weeks ago Peter Thiel!?!? It was ONLY ever about the 2024 money & power. Trump screwed AZ.

      • The Loan Arranger says:

Wrong race! “Mick” is running for the US Senate. We’re discussing the governor’s race.

        “Mick” is polling low.

  6. jojo says:

NEVER vote for anyone connected to, endorsed by, worked for, appointed to board by the McCain/Ducey machine. The only way to get rid of the McCain stain to to get ’em outta there. 1 down, 1 to go. Too bad seeing red is so stuck.

  7. lowadobian says:

Matt has class, the element ignoramus Lake also lacks profoundly. She is tone deaf and Drunk With Trump like too many others. Trump foisted her on us and he has now lost many faithful voters. We are rallying to Robson en masse.

    • Seeing Red AZ says:

      lowadobian,

Please do not fill in the space for URL when you comment. We
have to remove it each time. We have no way of permanently closing it. Thanks!

  8. Southwest Cincinnatus says:

“Matt has class?” Salmon has stuffed his pockets with ASU money courtesy of Mike Crow, and a cushy “Government Relations” gig for that institution of indoctrination!
No, “Matt has cash” is more like it…and the betting here is another well paying job for him soon…this time in the service of “Robson Communities.”

    • lowadobian says:

It is unfortunate you spew the Far Left’s & Lake’s”talking points”.
Experience matters. Don’t shoot down Capitalism in America. I know it’s hard to see it from the Rust Belt.

    • D.B. Cooper says:

As predicted, Matt Salmon has endorsed the woman who finally married well, Her husband is long in the tooth, as gramps used to say, but he is endowed where it matters most…in his bank accounts.

  9. Jack says:

The final blow to Salmon’s campaign was his praise for Rusty Bowers when he appeared on Bram Resnick’s show. Resnick is no fan of Republicans in general, but especially those who shamelessly lather praise on contemptible opportunists like Bowers.

  10. Bye Bye McCain says:

jojo above is right. It’s a higher priority right now to root out the remaining McCain connected machine than to get the perfect candidate. Robison no-go. Have to support Lake. We’ll sort it out later. Bury the McCain machine once and for all. I like McGuire too, but will vote for the top non-Brnovich GOP candidate to ensure Brnovich doesn’t get through. Again, no more McCain machine. It needs to go to the dustbin of history and never be a factor again.

  11. BenF says:

Lake will be restricted by the legislature. She has no long-time friends there. Scarrin Karrin has the McCain, Kyl, Ducey and Chamber cabal in her pocket and is a bigger threat.
