Maricopa County Recorder Richer seeks support after alleging threats

The headline, “Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer talks threats,” must have been so effective it was used in two consecutive, identical articles — both Tuesday and Wednesday — in the failing local leftwing newspaper whose readership has fallen to all-time lows and reports are often repeated.

Elected as a Republican, the former democrat was in his comfortable element when he appeared with CNN’s Erin Burnett, calling then-President Trump, “Unhinged.” The negative epithet proved so valuable, the newspaper used it in oversized type towering over a large photo of Richer and those who claimed they found no discrepancies in the 2000 election results that put Joe Biden over the top in Arizona, despite state, county and congressional Republicans reliably winning election or reelections.

The newspaper’s former sob-story columnist, now conscripted as a tedious political pot-stirrer, comes to Richer’s defense, something that would be anathema if he was an actual conservative rather than just playing one when convenient — an increasingly less frequent occurrence. She even devoted a column to Seeing Red AZ’s dissatisfaction with Richer, who we erroneously endorsed when we initially bought into his conservative contrivance. We will not link to her haughty attempt to marginalize us, or send our readers to the head-spinning environs of radicalism.

The hard truth is we made a colossal mistake. After years of Helen Purcell’s leadership as Maricopa County Recorder, we were not prepared for Richer’s duplicity.

  1. Arizona Conservative Guy says:

Stephen Richer is far safer with us than we are with him. We were conned.

  2. Frankly Speaking says:

Stephen Richer refers to his job as, “psychologically unfun.” He wasn’t elected for fun. In fact, he’s turned out to be very unfunny.

  3. Seen It All says:

Helen Purcell served seven terms as Maricopa County Recorder. She lost her last election due to long lines at polling places that were beyond her control. The Board of Supervisors, trying to save money, significantly reduced the number of polling places creating havoc that was wrongfully blamed on Purcell. Richer wishes he could be as good at the job as she was.

  4. Not A McCainiac says:

Richer’s current term ends January 2025. He can do a lot of damage in that time. Republicans need to recruit someone with longtime GOP credentials and not be conned again. This job oversees our elections. The title “Recorder” makes it sound almost secretarial. It is NOT. Recruitment should start NOW.
