The gang that couldn’t shoot straight

First a bit of background: The Executive Guidance Committee (EGC) is an arm of the of the Maricopa County Republican Committee (MCRC).  Recently there has been an insurrection of sorts due to the fact that the Maricopa County Chairman Rob Haney, took some legislators to task for absconding from their duties by slipping out on important Sanctuary City votes while the legislature was still in session.

Those who were smarting over the appropriate jaunt to the woodshed are now out for revenge.  Their weapon of the moment was this resolution.

So Thursday evening some of those aggrieved legislators, by way of their surrogates, offered a resolution intended to modify the bylaws of the MCRC. The problem is that it is beyond the scope of the EGC’s authority to issue such a directive. The EGC is, after all, subordinate to the MCRC.

But most importantly, in saying that no member will be permitted to criticize any elected Republican officeholder or candidate on behalf of the EGC without the approval of a super majority of its members — renders the resolution pointless, since no one has done that. In other words a remedy was being sought for something that never occurred, since Chairman Haney was speaking as chairman of the MCRC and did not claim to speak on behalf of the EGC.

Having shot themselves in their foot, the authors of the resolution are seen limping into the sunset.

And they can be seen high-fiving each other for creating a placebo. They are clueless. “Under-educated” comes to mind.

It should be noted that the merry band of McCain minions who lead the non-revolt against Haney have self proclaimed leaders. Rep. John McComish addressed the EGC with his main point being “there ought to be a rule” against County Chairman Haney exercising his first amendment right to voice his opinion. Farrell Quinlan, as a member of EGC, happily did Rep. John McComish’s official bidding to gag Rob Haney.

I noticed Quinlan was absent from the Thursday night meltdown of McCain’s minions.

Rob Haney was elected Chairman by 750+ Maricopa County Republican precinct committeemen. For a handful of RINOs to consider usurping our vote by attempting to silence Haney is an abuse of elective office by those RINO district chairmen.

Don’t Tread On Me and don’t try to usurp my vote for County Chairman.

Google is a wonderful device. For instance, if you google one Farrell Quinlan you will find that while VP of AZ Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he championed “a guest worker program and comprehensive federal immigration reform as the only solution rather than a tougher version of the failed system we have today.” He also opposed Senator Pearce’s Employer Sanctions legislation. He has now been selected as Exec Director of the National Federation of Independent Business. And wouldn’t you know it, this organization is in favor of bringing the Amnesty bill back, and filed a Friend-of-the-court brief along with the ACLU to overturn the AZ Employer Sanctions Law. Well,it all fits. It is no wonder why he wanted to chastise Chairman Haney for exposing the legislators who voted to continue sanctuary cities.

  4. Standing Tall says:

Wow! This is a behind-the-scenes look at the party apparatus that I didn’t even know existed, and I’ve been an elected precinct committeeman for four+ years.
Obviously there is a lot to learn, but as a conservative, I’m up for it. I live in a district where we are trying hard to keep our heads above water as the “moderates” are doing their best to undercut us. We’ve been recruiting like minded PC’s and doing very well. The tea parties were peopled with those who are simply fed up with the status quo of disappointments for politicians who tell us one thing and vote with the liberals in DC. And the state legislators who snuck out when the sanctuary city votes were taken should be ashamed of themselves.

  5. Jay Bird says:

Don’t the rights accorded under the First Amendment extend to all of us? That’s what I was taught. Last I heard, having a title didn’t diminsh Constitutional freedoms.

  6. Onward says:

@Standing Tall – Keep up the good work! Keep your ears open and you’ll be amazed at what you will hear.

Also, just wondering if a District Chair should also be the Exec Director of the National Federation of Independent Business? When the Republican platform is being discarded so that perks for other organizations are taking place seems like a conflict of interest to me. And that’s what American’s are sick and tired of. Just sayin’

I honestly don’t get it. Why would our own Republican Party members McCain, Kyl, Shadegg and Flake be so willing to turn our country over to invaders and refuse to obey the oath they took to defend the Constitution and the citizens even if the Democrats do not?

It just does not make sense. They are working to accomplish the same objective as the Democrats. Who in the world will represent us. Glenn Beck? He can expose, but he can’t vote them out of office and they have no shame. Otherwise, McCain would have been gone years ago. We all know he has destroyed the Party. He truly is the elephant around our neck.

I have argued this point for years. It is bad form for a district chairman, county chairman, EGC member (either individually or collectivelly) to endorse one GOP candidate over another in a primary. Likewise, it is bad form for a person of such position to rebuke or chastise an elected official in public.

Notice I said bad form, not in violation of bylaws.
Therein lies the rub. This resolution was designed to regulate such practice, on the surface it is worth a look. Digging deeper, I think the resolution while well intentioned, is censorship and therefore not in the spirit of the GOP. The answer is simply to get enough votes to elect like minded people to those positions. Everything else is sour grapes.

  10. Onward says:

    @nightcrawler –

I do agree with most of your post. I think we differ just a little on the fact that we have to hold our public officials accountable. Just because they are in office it doesn’t give them a “pass” to go against our party platform. But we can do that respectfully.

We absolutely need to be out there gathering like-minded conservatives to take this party back! As we know “elections have consequences”.

  11. Night Owl says:

    nightcrawler:
It might be “bad form” to engage in pre-primary endorsements, butmany are sure to recall when both of AZ’s “exemplary” US Sens. Kyl and McCain, and then-Secretary of State, Betsey Bayless, endorsed Andrew Pacheco at a Capitol press conference over the ultimate winner, Andrew Thomas, prior to the primary election for Maricopa County Attorney. That is but one example of such over reaching.

Rep. Shadegg even gave a pre primary endorsement of a lifelong Dem who switched to a Republican days before opening his campaign in a district race.
    The delegation set the example.

  12. nightcrawler says:

    Hey,

The rule should be applied to all. EGC was wrong to throw Bouie in the back the bus. I still maintain he got a raw deal and that even though the reasons were ideological, the appearance we gave the outside world is that we as a party prefer WASPs over newcomers. The same will happen as Parker runs for governor. Same is true of hard core immigration rhetoric. Before your throw Steele’s name out there, I am talking Arizona politics, not national. Again, I know you don’t mean it that way, but in politics perception is reality. We as a party come off looking exclusive not inclusive.

I do agree that the elected official also crossed the line. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

  13. Onward says:

Didn’t Randy Pullen recently endorse McCain for the 2010 election, which we are in now in the primary phase of the election?

The party at times does comes off looks looking totally “Exclusive” rather than Inclusive.

  14. Ben F says:

    night,

Get a clue. Bouie was an inveterate liar who professed to be a Republican in Florida and who was supported by the Wake Up/McCain forces and accused those who told the truth about him of being racist. He bought the bus and drove it over himself, no one threw him under it.

As to the ridiculous complaints of the Barto/et al supporters of illegal immigrants and all the crime and other deleterious attacks on our sovereignty and American lifestyle, Haney was right in telling it like it is. He was elected by the PCs in Maricopa to stand up for them in this fight for the soul of the Party.

If you have any other complaints, read the Platform. It is even stronger than Haney was in clearly setting the principles of the Republican Party. Follow it or follow the words of Ronald Reagan and depart from the Party.

Thanks to Rob Haney for his resolute stand for Republican principles.

  15. John Q says:

Stupidity and duplicity go hand in hand. The McCain sycophants qualify on both counts.

  16. Alicia G says:

So correct me if I am wrong – some legislators who call themselves Republicans ran out of a session so they would not have to vote against sanctuary cities. Am I right so far?

If they voted against the sanctuary policy, they would have conformed to the GOP platform. How am I doing?

Then Rob Haney calls them out for it, and HE is the one who is placed on the skewer – by fellow Republicans!!! Ya know what I think? It smells like there is a faction in the party that has cozied up to the Dems and their agenda vis-a-vis illegals. They don’t care what happens to the country as long as they can have their cheap labor.

It is time to name them and shame them.

  17. Royce says:

Anyone can call themselves a republican. The test is the platform. The platform is an official record of what Republicans support. The Party is not subservient to elected officials at any level. Elected officials invoking the name “Republican” are bond by the platform. As the elected leader of the County Republican Party the chairman has a duty to remind elected officers when they are out of line. The current chairman was elected, by a wide margin, to lead. It would be great if he could take them out behind the barn for a chat, but we all know there are no secrets in politics. The chairman acted as most of the base would expect.

Senator Verschoor said it right on both accounts. Representative McComish has a duty to defend membership and Chairman Haney has duty to remind the elected officers of their duty. All three are honorable men and worthy of our continued support.

Sanctuary policies supported by cities get people killed. Let’s all get together and pass this law.

  18. DeAnn says:

If I can’t hold elected officials accountable privately or publicly, then how do we change our party? It is in the primary that we weed out the people who are hurting our party.

  19. Onward says:

It’s not just in the primary that we need to weed people out It’s also in every Legislative District, in which every 2 years we elect new county and state leadership. We need to get out there and recruit conservative PCs who will then vote for people like Haney. That’s when we will change our party! So become a PC and hit the streets!
