Meet John McCain’s new chum: Jack Abramoff

The strangest of McBedfellows

Back in 2005, playing the role of Capt. Pureheart, John McCain led the charge of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, as he showcased Jack Abramoff’’s shady dealings in his pre-presidential campaign crusade to reveal public corruption on Capitol Hill.

Now, nearly 7 years later, according to this report in The Hill‘s Briefing Room blog, Arizona’s self proclaimed “Maverickis “lauding the disgraced former lobbyist’s efforts to reform campaign finance rules.”

Who can forget McCain’s unconstitutional campaign finance reform scheme, bearing the name McCain-Feingold?  He co-sponsored it with Wisconsin Democrat and former Sen. Russ Feingold, in another of his aisle-crossing maneuvers characterized throughout the years by alliances with liberals such as Ted Kennedy, Joe Lieberman, John Kerry and John Edwards. He has heaped praise on Nancy Pelosi and Al Gore as well as Janet Napolitano.

Fortunately, the McCain-Feingold effort at hamstringing Republicans was largely dismantled by court rulings, most notably the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission decision in 2010.

What an amazing turnabout. The new McCain-Abramoff twosome is beyond odd, given that Team McCain tried to use Abramoff against former Congressman and consistent conservative J.D. Hayworth when he had the temerity to challenge McCain — after nearly three decades of disservice — in Arizona’s 2010 U.S. Senate race. Out came the long-knives attempting to link Hayworth to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff — even though Hayworth was vindicated by the Justice Department and cleared of all allegations.

So typical.  So John McCain.

This is hilarious! What about McCain’s hypocritical decision to unilaterally withdraw from the public financing scheme when he was running for president in 2008? It was good for everyone but him?

  2. Stanford says:

McCain was running for President? I thought he was running for the slot as Obama’s Vice President. Would have bet money on it then. Nothing has dissuaded me since.

John McCain got religion on the subject — when it benefited him. I’ve lived in Arizona long enough to remember when he was one of the Keating Five senators accused of corruption in the Savings and Loan collapse in the 1980’s. He and Dennis DeConcini were able to squiggle out of charges while the others were given the boot. The core allegation against the senators involved in the Keating Five affair is that Keating had made contributions of about $1.3 million to them, and in return, he counted on those Senators to help him resist regulators. Keating lived in Arizona where both DeConcini and McCain were US Senators. All of those getting money from Keating were registered Democrats except for RINO McCain. John McCain was the only one of the five with close ties to Keating, as their families traveled together and Cindy and her father shared business investments with him. And Keating returned the generosity by contributing the most to McCain’s campaign coffers….$112,000. Although some of the other senators returned the money, McCain kept it.

Listen to the words of the former federal regulator at the end of this video as he describes John McCain.

  4. American Patriot says:

And who can forget McCain’s vote AGAINST President Bush’s tax cuts as well as his sponsorship with Democrat Ted Kennedy of AMNESTY legislation, before he was against it, during his 2010 senate race when he and his monkey Paul Baboon walked the border and promised a fence? By the way, what happened to that fence, Senator?

  5. Saguaro Sam says:

    McCain is our #1 carpetbagger.
    (from the freedictionary.com: “car·pet·bag·ger (kärpt-bgr):
    1. A Northerner who went to the South after the Civil War for political or financial advantage.
    2. An outsider, especially a politician, who presumptuously seeks a position or success in a new locality.”

At first, I thought that only #2, above, applied; However, McCain is probably old enough to remember the Civil War.

And JayNo is in a close race with Johnny for his #1 carpetbagger title.

    Remember this tidbit?:

    from Cronkite News

. . .Members of Arizona’s congressional delegation will sit with members of the opposing party at Tuesday’s State of the Union address by the president.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was the only Arizona lawmaker who had officially signed on by late Monday to the effort organized by a nonprofit group called No Labels. He and Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., both members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, will sit side-by-side for the president’s annual speech to both houses of Congress. . .”

Unfortunately, McCain has rode to victory on the back of many military veterans who will vote for him simply because he is a vet. And you may notice that, around election time for Johnny, there is always the “threat” of Luke AFB or Davis-Monthan getting the ax. And he jumps on his trusty white steed (possibly named Lindsey G) and saves the day.

McCain supported the regime change in Egypt – now it looks as if Muslim Brotherhood leader will be the President, what is he saying now – NOT A D**M thing! Didn’t he and Grahamnesty go to Eqypt to meet with the Brotherhood?? It seems he is pushing Obama’s agenda quite nicely, to the detriment of US and Israel.

  7. Maggie says:

Four years ago the Washington Times reported that since 2005, John McCain has been the prime sponsor of 82 bills, on which he had 120 Democrat co-sponsors out of 220 total, for an average of 55 percent. He worked with Democrats on 50 of his bills, and of those, 37 times Democrats outnumber Republicans as co-sponsors.
I wonder how high that number has jumped since.

  8. Dennis O'Brien says:

Hayworth incurred nearly $200,000 in legal fees as he was forced to defend himself against allegations that proved to be false. John McNasty was central to that terrible ordeal!!

  9. Held My Nose in 2008 says:

In the early 1990’s did not McNasty have the Investigation into our MIA’s in Vietnam closed? Or am I mistaken. I do know their families were outraged. I guess his colaboration was hidden for none to see.
